FORT WAYNE, IN - The No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team finished in fifth place on Saturday at the National Wrestling Coaches' Association NAIA National Duals at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

The Blue Raiders upset No. 6 Indiana Tech 24-19 in their first match of the day, followed by a 32-9 victory over Cumberlands (KY) in the consolation finals to take home fifth place at the 16-team tournament.

After a pair of wins over No. 10 Missouri Valley and No. 15 Baker (KS), and a loss to No. 1 Grand View (Iowa) on the first day of competition, Lindsey Wilson began day two by taking on sixth-ranked Indiana Tech in the consolation semis.

Chad Lampe got Lindsey Wilson started in the right direction as he upset Erique Early (ranked No. 7 at 125 pounds) with a 9-8 decision in the opening match to give the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead.

The Warriors answered at 133 pounds when Brett Yarbrough (No. 9 at 133) defeated Felix Casa del Valle by a 14-1 major decision to give Indiana Tech a 4-3 advantage.

But the Blue Raiders came up huge in the next three matches claiming 15 points with three-straight victories. Daniel Leonard (No. 16 at 141) began the run of points by upsetting Robert Humphrey (No. 12 at 141) with a pin in five minutes and 52 seconds to add six points and give the lead back to Lindsey Wilson at 9-4.

Isaac Thomas continued the trend of upsets after he defeated Thomas Garty (No. 6 at 149) via an 8-4 decision, and Joe Cozart (No. 1 at 157) pinned Mitch Roadruck in four minutes and 44 seconds to cap off the 15-point run to make it 18-4 for the Blue Raiders.

The Warriors would not go away though as Jacob Johnson (No. 8 at 165) pinned Court Mace to cut the lead to eight points at 18-10.

At the 174-pound weight class, Erick Gomez (No. 7 at 174) came up with a huge 4-3 decision victory over Antonio Rodriguez to create an 11-point cushion with three matches to go.

Michael Pixley had an opportunity to put the match out of reach at 184 pounds and that's exactly what he did as he pulled off another Blue Raider upset with a 3-2 decision win over LJ Grayson (No. 6 at 184), giving Lindsey Wilson a 24-10 lead with two matches remaining.

Indiana Tech picked up nine team points in the final two matches with a pin at 197 and a 5-2 decision win at 285, but the four weight-class upsets by the Blue Raider grapplers helped Lindsey Wilson top the Warriors 24-19 and advance to the consolation finals.

In the consolation finals, Lindsey Wilson met up with a familiar opponent in fellow Mid-South Conference member Cumberlands (KY), who is receiving votes in the national poll.

The teams alternated wins for the first seven weight classes, but the Blue Raiders used pins and technical falls to help build a 20-9 lead in the fifth-place match.

Lampe once again provided a strong start for the Blue Raiders as he pulled another upset when he pinned Jake Sinkovics (No. 13 at 125) in two minutes and three seconds to put Lindsey Wilson ahead 6-0.

The Patriots were able to cut the lead in half after Grant Burkhalter (No. 13 at 133) held on for a 4-2 decision win over Casa del Valle. Lindsey Wilson received another six points when Leonard recorded his second pin of the day, this time taking down Landon Burkhalter in four minutes and 53 seconds at 141 pounds for the 12-3 lead.

Cumberlands took the match at 149 pounds when Tristan Macri (No. 12 at 149) held off Thomas for a 4-2 decision to trim the lead to six at 12-6. Cozart racked up the points at 157 pounds defeating Gabe Dunham with a 20-5 technical fall to finish a perfect 5-0 at the tournament, giving the Blue Raiders a 17-6 lead in the process.

Cumberlands won with a 5-2 decision at 165 pounds, but Gomez took a decision of his own at 174 pounds defeating Daniel Toth (No. 9 at 174) by an 8-3 margin to give Lindsey Wilson a 20-9 advantage. Gomez put forth a strong showing at the competition finishing with a 4-1 record.

Leading by 11 points with three weight classes to go, Pixley once again had a chance to put the match out of reach with a victory and he proceeded to defeat Brocky Leidecker with a 21-6 technical fall at 184 pounds to complete his perfect 5-0 showing at the tournament.

Jake Maupin added a 15-2 major decision at 197 pounds over Devin Morrow and Ameer Daniels wrapped up the competition for the Blue Raiders with a 5-2 decision win over Nicholas Auxier at 285 in the final match, making the score 32-9 in favor of Lindsey Wilson.

Lindsey Wilson finished the competition with a 4-1 record, including three wins over ranked opponents.
