Paul Patton: Precious Memories! Beech Grove School

'The relocation of families when Wolfe Creek Dam was constructed was very traumatic to say the least. I recall hearing Jake McFarland (husband of Miss Ovalene) say that there was never a day passed that he did not think of his old home place, now covered with water, and long to see Horseshoe Bottom once more.' - PAUL PATTON

Paul Patton writes:
Thank you Jim for transcribing the message on the postcard mailed to Miss Ovalene Humble. The reference to the Beech Grove School reminded me that in addition to the school there was also the Beech Grove Christian Church where the Humbles, McFarlands, Lesters, McClures and other well known families were members. The Beech Grove Cemetery is still at the original site and I have conducted funerals and burials there. After the families were relocated and the church was closed, many of the church members became members of the Christian Churches in Russell Springs, Jamestown and Freeedom. The relocation of families when Wolfe Creek Dam was constructed was very traumatic to say the least. I recall hearing Jake McFarland (husband of Miss Ovalene) say that there was never a day passed that he did not think of his old home place, now covered with water, and long to see Horseshoe Bottom once more.

The Beech Grove Christian Church had a portable organ which was carried back and forth to church in a buggy. I recall seeing the organ in the possession of one of the former members of the church. It was very compact, folding up neatly into a case which could be easily transported. Also, the organist was short in stature and in addition to transporting the organ to the church for worship services she carried a small box which was placed at her pew so she could rest her feet during the service as her legs were so short her feet would not touch the floor and would have been tired from all that pumping of the organ while playing the hymns.

"Precious memories! How they linger." --Paul Patton
