Mrs. Barbara Ann Benefield Stokes, Cumberland Co., KY (1935-2014)

She was a seamstress, a homemaker and a member of the Burkesville Baptist Church and a long-time past member of Green Acres Baptist Church in Smyrna, Georgia. She was a native of Ft. Payne, AL, and a resident of Burkesville, KY, at the time of her death. She was the widow of Bobby Gene Stokes, her husband of over 45 years. She leaves 20 direct living descendants.

Mrs. Barbara Ann Benefield Stokes, age 79, of Burkesville, Kentucky, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Cumberland Valley Manor in Burkesville, Kentucky.

Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Ann Benefield Stokes will be conducted on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 1pmCT/2pmET at The Castellaw Funeral Home, 866 Church Street S.E., Smyrna, Georgia. Burial will be in the Georgia Memorial Gardens, 200 Cobb Pkwy, Marietta, Georgia.The family will receive friends on Friday, January 9, 2015 after 2pmCT, in The Memory Chapel of Norris-New Funeral Home, 601 N Main Street, Burkesville, KY. The family will receive friends from 12pm noon ET on Saturday, January 10, 2015 until the funeral hour at The Castellaw Funeral Home, 866 Church Street S.E., Smyrna, Georgia.



Mrs. Barbara Ann Benefield Stokes, Cumberland Co., KY (1935-2014)

She was born in Fort Payne, DeKalb County, AL, on Thursday, April 25, 1935, the daughter of Iris Arnold and Tommie Lou Chandler Benefield. She died Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Cumberland Valley Manor in Burkesville, Cumberland County, KY, at the age of 79 years, eight months, and nine days.

She was a seamstress, a homemaker and a member of the Burkesville Baptist Church and a long-time past member of Green Acres Baptist Church in Smyrna, Georgia.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Gene Stokes, whom she married on Monday, December 20, 1954 and who preceded her in death, on Friday, May 26, 2000, her brother, Jerry M. Benefield, her granddaughter, Julie Ann Gilmette, her brother-in-law, Duane Chambers and her sister-in-law, Geraldine Benefield.

She is survived by the following:
  • Her children: Barbara Lynn (and Ray) Gilmette of Newport, North Carolina; Stephen Stokes of Burkesville, Kentucky; Maribeth (and Dr. Mark) Shelton of Burkesville, Kentucky; and Michael (and Brenda) Stokes of Nettleton, Mississippi

  • Her sisters and brother: Mary Chambers of Tucker, Georgia; Kenneth Benefield of Anniston, Alabama; Nancy (and Paul) Durden of Tucker, Georgia

  • Her sister-in-law, Wanda Benefield of Marietta, Georgia

  • Her grandchildren: Amy (and Adam) Reeves, Melissa (and Brian) Pittman, Brian (and Emily) Gilmette, Kevin (and Laura) Stokes, Thomas Thornton, Zachary (and Julie) Shelton, Tyler (and Tabatha) Shelton and Bobby Stokes

  • Her great-grandchildren: Kayla, Beckett, Sequoia, Chloe, Camden, Piper Jo Shelton and Sadie Kate Shelton

  • Plus a host of other relatives and friends
