By Jon Halsey

I heartily applaud the new Air and Space career path introduced yesterday. However, I do want to "go on record" regarding the poster prominently displayed in several of the photos accompanying the announcement.

While expressing a nice sounding platitude, the fact remains that the "way we taught yesterday\'s students\" not only put us at the forefront of all nations, enabled us to become the most technological advanced society in history, enabled us to lift numerous other Countries and "got us to the moon."

Most agree that the state of U.S. education has been and continues to be in crises. I am among the many who lay the bulk of that blame at the feet of the author of the sentiment expressed on that poster - the psychologist, philosopher, educational reformer John Dewey.

While some of his propositions are laudable, many of his schemes have resulted in the deterioration of public school education to the point that high school graduates who cannot compose a coherent sentence or make change without a calculator no longer seem to be an exception.
