Deadline to Change Party Affiliation is December 31, 2014 A reminder from Adair County Clerk Joyce Rodgers and Adair County Clerk-elect Lisa Greer: Registration forms are available at county clerks' offices and can also be downloaded from the State Board of Elections' website Click on headline for complete story By Lynn Sowards Zellen & Bradford Queen News from the Kentucky Secretary of States Office Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is reminding registered voters who wish to vote in another party's May 2015 Primary Election or be a candidate as a member of another political party in the regularly scheduled 2015 elections that they must change their registration no later than December 31, 2014. The deadline also applies to registered voters who wish to attain ballot access in the November 2015 General Election as an Independent. "In 2015, Kentuckians will go to the polls to elect state Constitutional officers," said Grimes, Kentucky's chief election official. "The Commonwealth has closed primaries, and we want to make sure all eligible Kentuckians are qualified to vote in the primary election of their choice." To be qualified to vote in a partisan primary election, a voter must have been a member of that party on December 31 of the preceding year or a new registrant who has not changed his or her affiliation. Voters who change party affiliation after the deadline will not be eligible to vote in partisan races in the May 19, 2015, Primary Election, although they may vote in nonpartisan races on the May Primary ballot. Prospective candidates in the regularly scheduled 2015 elections are also affected by the December 31 deadline. To be qualified as a party or independent candidate in a regular election, a candidate's registration status generally must be established by December 31 of the year preceding the election, per Kentucky law. Voters can verify their current registration status through the State Board of Elections' Voter Information Center. To change party affiliation, register voters must complete a voter registration card and return it to the county clerk in their county of residence. Registration forms are available at county clerks' offices and can be downloaded from the State Board of Elections' website. Qualified military and overseas voters can also update their registration information through the new online portal. Registration cards submitted by mail must be postmarked by December 31, 2014. Registration forms submitted in person or electronically must be received by the county clerk by the deadline. Individuals who prefer to submit their cards in person should check with their county clerks' offices regarding hours of operation during the holiday season.
