From Lindsey Wilson College SIOUX CITY, IA - Despite suffering a 3-1 defeat to Rocky Mountain (MT) in the final match of pool play Thursday night, the Lindsey Wilson Volleyball team still advances to the knockout round of the NAIA Volleyball National Championships, for the first time in program history. Lindsey Wilson Volleyball faces Concordia (CA), Friday, 5 Dec 2014, at 12:30pmCT, Knockout Round of NAIA Volleyball National Championships, at Tyson Events Center, 401 Gordon Drive, Sioux City, IA. The Blue Raiders opened the match with four-straight points thanks to kills by Yeniffer Ramirez and Sarah Shilling, and a pair of service aces by Catie Cline. The Battlin’ Bears cut the Blue Raider lead to one at 11-10, but then Lindsey Wilson rolled out an 8-2 run to build a commanding 19-13 lead. But Rocky Mountain is ranked No. 1 in the country for a reason and the Battlin’ Bears began to mount their comeback. Rocky Mountain went on a 12-3 run to stun Lindsey Wilson in the opening set with a 25-22 victory. The Battlin' Bears recorded four of their final six points in the set on blocks as they took a 1-0 lead over Lindsey Wilson. The second set saw the two teams trade points early until the match was tied at 15-15. Lindsey Wilson used a strong of points including a pair of Sarah Anderson kills and another Cline service ace to build a 20-17 lead late. But once again the Blue Raiders struggled to put away Rocky Mountain as the Battlin’ Bears closed out the set on an 8-2 run to steal the set 25-22. This time, Rocky Mountain did it with offense recording six of the eight points via kills. The third set saw Lindsey Wilson build as much as a six-point lead at the 16-10 mark. But just like in the previous sets, the Battlin’ Bears roared back with seven of eight points to tie the match at 17-17. Rocky Mountain took their first lead of the set after another block gave them a 22-21 lead. The Blue Raiders fought off a match point with a Ramirez kill, and retook the lead at 26-25 on a Nadelina Nesheva kill. Lindsey Wilson would hold set point four times until Rocky Mountain committed a ball-handling error and gave the Blue Raiders the 30-28 set victory. The fourth set remained close in the early goings as Rocky Mountain built a 9-8 lead. But then the Battlin’ Bears turned up the offensive intensity and went on a 10-1 run, capturing nine of the 10 points on kills, to take a 19-9 advantage. The lead proved to be too much as Lindsey Wilson got no closer than nine points and Rocky Mountain took the set 25-15 and the top seed in Pool A. Lindsey Wilson was held to an attacking percentage of .179 for the match, while Rocky Mountain achieved a .272 mark. The Battlin’ Bears also committed just 10 attacking errors while the Blue Raiders finished with 26. The stifling Rocky Mountain defense recorded 14.0 blocks in win compared to just 2.5 by the Blue Raiders. Ramirez led Lindsey Wilson for the third-straight night with 23 kills, while Nesheva (15) and Shilling (12) also joined her in double digits. Makenzie Montano had 43 assists while Caitlyn Tino (29) and Ramirez (20) both reached career-highs in digs. Rocky Mountain was led by Yang Yang who finished with 22 kills and a .462 attacking percentage. Ahlea Billis had 16 kills and Tori Bertsch had 46 assists.
