ACHS English classes present fable projects to ACES, ACPC kids

Great Idea, with upper grade student teaching elementary students was a win-win. 'The students did a fabulous job as did Mrs. Mantooth. Her students interacted with the younger children like old pros and I don't know who had more fun today while I was with them, the ACPC students, or the seniors. I was truly impressed with this project. It was a win-win! Another example of the innovative teaching going on at ACHS. Kudos Mrs. Mantooth keep up the great work!' - - Sharmarie Claiborne

Students enrolled in one of Mrs. Robyn Mantooth's senior English classes, at Adair County High School, spent the past two days presenting fable projects to students at Adair County Elementary School yesterday and Adair County Primary Center today. It was the cumulative event, to a unit over the topic of fables, for her classes.

After students had completed reading their required two fables that Mrs. Mantooth had chosen for them and taken their "test" over the material, Mrs. Mantooth kicked their learning into overdrive. She created a project for her students that incorporated higher order thinking, the 7 Habits, and the "Leader in Me" core ideas of mentorship and synergy.

Students were put into groups and allowed to read as many fables as they could find. After which they had to pick their favorite fable, identify the moral, then connect the moral to one of the 7 Habits. Now some teachers would have stopped there but not Mrs. Mantooth. Each group was required to create a presentation about their fable, the Habit it connects too, and then create an activity for ACPC/ACES students to reinforce the fable, moral, and habit they had chosen. And if that wasn't enough, they then had to present their projects to age appropriate children and mentor them as they completed their activity.

The students did a fabulous job as did Mrs. Mantooth. Her students interacted with the younger children like old pros and I don't know who had more fun today while I was with them, the ACPC students, or the seniors. I was truly impressed with this project. It was a win-win! Another example of the innovative teaching going on at ACHS. Kudos Mrs. Mantooth keep up the great work!
