LWC Men's Soccer claims MSC Tournament Championship Blue Raiders receive automatic bid into NAIA National Tournament with the 2-1 victory over St. Cathrine. Click on headline for full story By Matthew Stokes News from Lindsey Wilson College CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY -The top-seeded Lindsey Wilson men’s soccer team defeated third-seeded St. Catharine (KY), 2-1, on Friday, November 14, 2014, en route to the 2014 Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship. Playing in frigid conditions at Ron Finley Stadium in Campbellsville, Kentucky, the Blue Raiders (14-2-2) used an 81st-minute goal to break a 1-1 tie with the Patriots (15-6-0). In what started the sequence that resulted in the decisive goal for Lindsey Wilson, a long ball from beyond midfield was sent deep up the left sidelines to a sprinting Yusuf Ackers. Ackers dribbled furiously up to the near side of the St. Catharine 18-yard box, and crossed the ball across the field in front of the Patriots’ goal. The ball arrived on the far side, right at the feet of Anthony Tshimpi, who booted the ball home for a 2-1 Lindsey Wilson lead. That lead would hold to give the Blue Raiders their 13th MSC Tournament title and the automatic bid into the NAIA National Championship Tournament. The Blue Raiders held a 1-0 halftime advantage courtesy of a Keletso Mosime goal in the 15th minute. Playing on the far side of the St. Catharine box, Mosime gained possession of the ball and sent it into the bottom-right back of the net for the match’s first goal. Shortly after halftime, a Blue Raider player was sent off after receiving a red card, putting Lindsey Wilson down to 10 men for the remainder of the match. St. Catharine would take advantage of the extra man, netting the tying goal in the 71st minute. On Harry Kirwan’s corner kick from the far side, the ball scooted wide to the near side in front of the Lindsey Wilson goal. A mad scramble for the ball ensued just beyond the six yard box. After several kicks at the ball, Ashley Woods blasted a shot that found the back of the Blue Raider goal for the game-tying score. But the Blue Raiders had an answer of their own via Tshimpi’s game-winning goal. For the night, Lindsey Wilson held a narrow 11-10 edge in shots and took six corner kicks compared to just one by the Patriots. Blue Raider goalkeeper Dalyan Hawes made six saves and allowed one goal. In goal for St. Catharine, CJ Powell stopped three shots and surrendered a pair of goals. With the victory, the Blue Raiders earn the MSC’s automatic bid to the 2014 NAIA National Tournament. The Patriots end their season with a 15-6-0 overall record.
