News from Kentucky Agricultural Development Board (KADB)

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 19, 2014) - Today the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board (KADB), chaired by Gov. Steve Beshear, approved $3,799,032 for 53 agricultural diversification projects across the Commonwealth during its September board meeting. State and regional investments approved included:

State Viticulture Program
The University of Kentucky Research Foundation was approved for $441,301 in state funds for a two-year viticulture program. The goals of the program are to identify the best vineyard management practices and grapevine cultivars for Kentucky's grape and wine industry; offer vineyard and winery educational meetings and consultations; compile data on current grapevine acreage and planted varieties; initiate a UK wine sales program; and, provide wine and grape testing for growers and producers. For more information about this project, contact Dr. Robert Houtz at 859-257-1758, 859-421-0740 or rhoutz@uky.edu. County investments approved included:

Agricultural Energy Investments
The On-Farm Energy Efficiency Program provides incentives for Kentucky farm families to increase energy efficiency and renewable fuel production. Successful applicants may receive up to 50 percent reimbursement of the actual cost of a qualified energy saving project, up to $10,000. Thirty applicants for On-Farm Energy Efficiency Program incentives were approved totaling $260,250 in Adair (2), Ballard (2), Barren (3), Breckinridge, Carlisle, Casey, Cumberland, Daviess, Edmonson, Hickman, Marion (2), McLean (4), Metcalfe (2), Pulaski (2), Russell, Shelby, Todd, Washington and Webster (2) counties.

Certified Kitchen and Demonstration Equipment
The Carlisle County Extension District Board was approved for $50,000 in Carlisle County funds to purchase kitchen and audio-visual equipment. The equipment will be used in the certified kitchen and demonstration area of the county's Agricultural Marketing and Education Center. The equipment will be used for processing of value-added products, as well as workshops and demonstration activities. For more information about this project in Carlisle County, visit http://carlisle.ca.uky.edu or contact Sara Martin, county extension agent for family and consumer sciences, at 270-628-5458 or 270-562-0405.

On-Farm Investments

The County Agricultural Investment Program (CAIP) is designed to provide farmers with incentives to allow them to improve and diversify their current production practices in an effort to increase net farm income. CAIP covers a wide variety of on-farm agricultural enterprises in its 10 investment areas, including production, marketing and value-added processing. Sixteen CAIPs were approved by the board totaling $2,341,374 for Barren, Carter, Edmonson, Gallatin, Henderson, Lyon, McLean, Owen, Pulaski, Robertson, Russell, Taylor, Trigg, Washington, Webster and Woodford counties.

In addition to these new approvals, an additional $703,538 was approved to supplement existing CAIPs in Bourbon, Jessamine, Metcalfe and Muhlenberg counties.

Shared-Use Equipment

The Shared-use Equipment Program is designed to benefit a high number of producers who cannot justify ownership expenses associated with certain equipment by helping them access technology necessary to improve their operations in an economical manner. One Shared-use Equipment Program was approved by the board for Pulaski County, totaling $2,569.

Gov. Steve Beshear and the Kentucky General Assembly continue to make great strides toward lessening Kentucky's dependence on tobacco production while revitalizing the farm economy by investing a portion of Kentucky's Master Settlement Agreement Funds into the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund.

To date, Kentucky has invested more than $420million in an array of county, regional and state projects designed to increase net farm income and create sustainable new farm-based business enterprises. These funding approvals, made possible by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund, represent just a few of the more than 4,900 projects approved, since the inception of the program in January 2001.
