The Procession Carrying Capt. Tony Grider Home
Click on headline for album to date. In progress.
By Ed Waggener
It is the saddest of times. For the Columbia Community, one would have to reach back in history more than 142 years to find a moment at this time of day, at dusk, to find a time so nearly as heart rending as the Community witnessed yesterday afternoon, as the procession carrying Capt. Tony Grider home made its way slowly south around the square past icons of what Capt. Tony Grider loved, symbols of where he served with such extraordinary enthusiasm and dedication, where his boundless optimism sparked community pride and community change.
It was a time which will never be forgotten by any who were there. The story continues, and may not be fully told by this or any of the other media chronicling it. The pictures taken by jounalists there will draw on emotions evident to a stranger, but so painfully and keenly felt by a grieving community.
Here - we're unsure of the pace of the posts - the story is being assembled in a modest album, to include staff photos and photos taken along the Capt. Grider's journey, back home to Adair, including pictures taken by our colleague in Campbellsville, Larry Smith, FM 92.7 the WAVE and FM 99.9, the Big Dawg, and perhaps others. As always, we'll welcome submissions by others. - Ed Waggener

Huge turnout to honor Captain Grider in Campbellsville
2014-09-20 - 1765 New Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM radio. Crowds have appeared all along the procession route carrying Fallen Firefighter Captain Tony Grider Home to Adair County. In Campbellsville, where he was an officer in the Campbellsville Fire Department, this was the scene at 4:30pmCT/5:30pmET as procession was just making it's way from Hodgenville down KY 210, about 20 minutes before its scheduled passage through Campbellsville. From Campbellsville, the procession will travel south into Adair County, entering Columbia on Campbellsville Street, and will circle the Historic Courthouse and exit north to Grissom Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia. Large crowds are expected to stand in silent honor of much loved local civil servant and friend. Capt. Grider died today as the result of injuries suffered August 21, 2014, on the campus of Campbellsville University. - Larry Smith, FM 92.7 and FM 99.9 radio SEE: Anthony Lynn (Tony) Grider, Adair Co., KY (1973-2014) Read More... | Comments? | Click here to share, print, or bookmark this photo.

Procession carrying Capt. Tony Grider home: Campbellsville, KY

Procession carrying Capt. Tony Grider Home: Ladder One
2014-09-21 - 200 Block Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. There wasn't a dry eye in Columbia as Ladder One passed in review by the silent crowd whose shadows line the street, to honor the procession carrying Captain Tony Grider home. The apparatus has now become a symbol of even more greater significance than that of a progressive community. It was on a similar apparatus owned by brother firefighters in Campbellsville that Capt. Grider suffered injuries on 21 Aug 2014 which eventually resulted in his death 30 days later, on Saturday, 20 Sep 2014. - Ed Waggener Read More... | Comments? | Click here to share, print, or bookmark this photo.

Procession carrying Capt. Tony Grider Home: The Moment
2014-09-21 - 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Everyone knew, even if the Supporting Heroes van had no markings noting its role that this van was carrying the earthly remains of Capt. Tony Grider home to Columbia. The only sounds to be heard as it passed was weeping, choked back tears, and, overhead, the faint sound of high flying news aircraft. The van made a well deserved victory lap for Capt. Grider around the Historic Square Capt. Grider so deeply loved, to return a few moments later to the spot where Grissom-Martin Funeral Home director Blake Martin is standing, above, at attention. - Ed Waggener SEE: Anthony Lynn (Tony) Grider, Adair Co., KY (1973-2014) Read More... | Comments? | Click here to share, print, or bookmark this photo.

Procession carrying Capt. Grider Home: Campbellsville colleagues
2014-09-21 - 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. On the right, Larry Walker, a member of an iconic firefighting family waves an American flag greeting members of Capt. Tony Grider's Campbellsville Fire Department, as units pass. Hardly a vehicle passed without occupants betraying overwhelming grief. Perhaps in no other area of life in South Central Kentucky have county lines been erased as they have been between firefighters; the selfless mutual aid between Columbia and Campbellsville is decades old. Procession carrying Capt. Grider Home: Past familar places
2014-09-21 - Intersection Campbellsville Street & Merchant Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. As the van carried the earthly remains of Capt. Tony Grider past the funeral home around the Square, it was meeting procession vehicles by then looped around the Square. It would pass City Hall, where the young man had served with almost boyish enthusiasm, embracing every move he saw as progressive, and where, in the immediate preceding months, he had continued to serve a passion of his, better parks or the youth of the community, as a Parks & Recreation board member. It would go past a Breeding Fire Department tanker, in the Municipal Parking Lot parked in his honor. It was passing, Merchant Street, where his "home" fire departments were less than a block away. It would circle the Square, where he had taken part in Downtown Days and an unforgettable campaign gesture, as dressed as a clown and handed out balloons at Treats on the Town, and where he regularly visited, not so much to talk politics, but to talk progress.
