Work on new I-65 project begins tonight, Sep 17, 2014

By Chris Jessie, Public Information Office
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 4, Elizabethtown, KY

Elizabethtown, KY (September 17, 2014) - Motorists traveling along Interstate 65 south of Elizabethtown (Mile Point 82) will experience short southbound delays for the next 4-5 nights as construction crews reduce the interstate to one lane and begin setting temporary barrier wall in preparation for widening. As barrier wall is set along the inside lane, crews will be paving the outside shoulder. When complete, traffic will be pushed to the outer lane and shoulder for the next several months as median work takes place.

When southbound barrier wall crews reach Munfordville (Mile Point 65), the same process will be repeated on northbound lanes and will progress back to Mile Point 82, also taking 4-5 nights and reducing the interstate to one northbound lane.

Setting barrier wall and paving shoulders in both directions should be complete in approximately two weeks.

Phasing of the project in this manner allows two lanes to remain open throughout the majority of the entire widening process. Only temporary lane closures will be required between now and the mid-2017 completion date.

Workers will be present overnight from 7pm to 7amCT. All lanes will be open during daytime commute. Speed limits are reduced to 55mph through the entire work zone. Motorists are encouraged to minimize distractions and pay close attention to signage while approaching and traveling through the work zone. Kentucky State Police is actively working with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Scotty's Contracting on traffic safety details. KSP will be utilized to monitor and enforce speed and work zone restrictions.

This project continues the goal of widening I65 through the entire Commonwealth, picking up where another project is currently underway at Munfordville and continuing north to Sonora. Approximately 9 miles of I65 from Sonora to Elizabethtown will remain to complete the goal.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet updates will be issued from the District 4 office in Elizabethtown throughout the duration of the project.
