Dawn of a New Day on display at 2014 LWC Homecoming

By Duane Bonifer
COLUMBIA, KY - The dawn of a new day at Lindsey Wilson College was on display throughout the college’s 2014 homecoming weekend.
A total of six individuals were also honored by the college during its 83rd homecoming weekend. Four individuals were recognized by the Lindsey WIlson National Alumni Association, and two alumnae were inducted into the Lindsey Wilson Athletic Hall of Fame.
The Lindsey Wilson community was also introduced to the new Blue Raider Bob, the college’s mascot. Thanks to a fund-raising campaign by the LWC Class of 2013, the college’s 17-year-old mascot received a makeover in the form of a customized mascot costume. The new Blue Raider Bob was introduced right before kickoff of the LWC-Kentucky Wesleyan College football game on Saturday night at Blue Raider Stadium. The original Blue Raider Bob was appointed LWC mascot emeritus.
The LWC National Alumni Association dubbed the event the “dawn of a new day.”
But in remarks earlier in the day at the Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame Celebration, LWC President William T. Luckey Jr. said that the 111-year-old liberal arts college recently experience the dawn of a new day.
“While I think our theme was meant to reveal a new costume for our mascot, Blue Raider Bob, a lot of us probably don’t remember having a mascot while we were at Lindsey Wilson,” Luckey told more than 200 guests at Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center.
Luckey also said that when award recipient and 2001 LWC alumnus Chris Estes of Lexington, KY, attended LWC, the college did not have a health-and-wellness center nor a sports park.
In the last 10 years, LWC has invested more than $50 million in an expansion of its A.P. White Campus, contributing to another kind of dawn of a new day at the college, Luckey said.
The one constant, however, over the years, he said, has been the commitment of the LWC faculty and staff.
“What we did have then -- and what I’m convinced that we still have today -- is a passionate and a nurturing and a committed group of faculty and staff who love this place and love its precious students,” said Luckey, who has been the college’s eighth president since 1998.
At the Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame Celebration, Givens received the Distinguished Alumnus Award and Estes received the Young Alumnus Award. The Rev. Howard O. and Dee Reynolds, both of Lexington, KY, were named honorary alumni.
Also at the Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame Celebration, two members from the Class of 2001 were inducted into the LWC Athletic Hall of Fame: Michelle Burns Perry of Indianapolis was the first volleyball player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and Jessica Seamon of Smyrna, GA, was the first softball player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Perry’s induction coincided with the 20th anniversary of volleyball as an NAIA intercollegiate sport at LWC.
Also on Saturday, the LWC student body crowded a new homecoming queen and king. Katarina Simic of Malmo, Sweden, who represented soccer, was crowned queen, and Felix Casa Del Valle of Louisville, KY, who represented the Freshman Year Experience Peer Mentors, was crowned king.
