PORTSMOUTH, OH - The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team opened 2014 Mid-South Conference play with a sweep of Shawnee State (Ohio) Wednesday night at the Frank and Janis Waller Gymnasium.

With the 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-17) win, it marks the seventh-straight match Lindsey Wilson has swept their opponent this season.

The Blue Raiders (12-2, 1-0) have now won 20 consecutive MSC regular-season matches dating back to Nov. 6, 2012.

Shawnee State falls to 7-4 on the year and 0-1 in conference play after suffering just their second loss at home this season.

The Bears scored the opening point of the match in set one, but a 7-1 Blue Raider run forced a Shawnee State timeout. Lindsey Wilson held a 10-4 lead before four-consecutive attacking errors allowed the Bears to climb to within two at 10-8.

Shawnee State would continue to trim the lead, eventually cutting the Blue Raider advantage to one at 15-14. But as close as the Bears would get, they were never able to become level with Lindsey Wilson for the remainder of the set. The Blue Raiders clung to a 1-3 point lead the rest of the way capped off by a Yennifer Ramirez kill to take the set 25-23.

Set two began as a tight battle with Lindsey Wilson holding a slight 10-8 lead after the first 18 points. The Blue Raiders would proceed to go on a 14-1 run against the Bears including two strings of seven-consecutive points to take a 24-9 lead. Lindsey Wilson recorded six kills and a pair of blocks during the run. Sarah Shilling would seal the set with a final kill for the 25-11 win.

Shawnee State won the opening point for the third-consecutive time in the final set and even held a 7-6 lead over the Blue Raiders. But Lindsey Wilson would secure the next five points thanks to a strong defensive effort. Three-consecutive blocks by Ramirez, Shilling and Sarah Anderson helped the Blue Raiders retake the lead for the final time on the night.

Lindsey Wilson would use another five-point run to take a 17-10 lead and push the lead to as many as 10 at the 24-14 mark. The Bears attempted a late rally with three-straight points, but a kill by Ramirez finished the match 25-17 for the Blue Raiders.

Ramirez shined in her season debut for Lindsey Wilson, leading the team with 14 kills and 12 digs including a pair of service aces. Shilling also finished in double-digit kills with 11 while hitting .400 on the night. Shilling assisted on six blocks giving the team eight total in the win. Anderson hit .583 as she recorded eight kills while Makenzie Montano finished with 30 assists.

The Blue Raider defense held the Bears to a .078 attacking percentage in the loss. Tiffany Jackson led Shawnee State with seven kills while Madison Smith finished with 16 digs. Bonnie Huesing had 12 assists in the match.
