Blue Raider Volleyball improves to 7-2 on the season with 2 wins

No. 10 Lindsey Wilson Volleyball sweeps final matches at Saint Xavier/Trinity Christian Crossover Tournament in Chicago

CHICAGO, IL - The 10th-ranked Lindsey Wilson College volleyball team swept their final two opponents at the Saint Xavier (IL)/Trinity Christian (IL) Crossover Tournament Saturday morning at the Shannon Center.



The Blue Raiders (7-2) swept tournament co-host Saint Xavier 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-12) in their first match and followed with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-13) victory over Cornerstone (MI) in the tournament finale.

In the opening set of the day, Lindsey Wilson and Saint Xavier (2-4) exchanged points until the match became tied at 8-8. A Cougar attacking error and back-to-back kills by Sarah Anderson and Daryna Liutikova gave Lindsey Wilson an 11-8 lead. Saint Xavier answered with three straight kills to bring the match back square at 11-11.

The Blue Raiders saw an 18-15 lead diminish as the Cougars won the next four points to take a 19-18 lead. It marked just the second time in the set the Blue Raiders trailed. Lindsey Wilson would rally back and take a 24-23 lead before a kill by Anderson won the set 25-23.

In set two, the Blue Raiders jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Lindsey Wilson would maintain their lead throughout the set and build an eight-point advantage at the 24-16 mark before a kill by Liutikova eventually won the set at 25-17.

Lindsey Wilson started hot again in set three with a 4-0 run. The Blue Raiders would slowly build their lead until leading by as many as 13 at the 23-10 mark. After a pair of Cougar points, kills by Nadelina Nesheva and Catie Cline would secure the set and the 3-0 match win.

Nesheva and Liutikova both finished with nine kills in the match followed by Anderson with seven and Sarah Shilling with six. Makenzie Montano finished with 30 assists. Kirsten King, Caitlyn Tino and Montano all tallied eight digs.

The Blue Raiders hit .319 as a team led by Montano who finished with an attacking percentage of .714. Anderson went 7-for-14 on attempts for a .500 attacking percentage while Liutikova hit .364. Lindsey Wilson committed just nine attacking errors in 94 attempts.

The Cougars managed to hit just .167 as a team while committing 14 attacking errors. Marie Hackert led the team with 10 kills while Jessica Galotta and Dominique Aramburu each had 15 digs.

In their final match, the Blue Raiders emerged to a 9-3 lead in the first set. A Cornerstone (2-1) rally and six-straight points brought the set tied at 13-13. The teams would continue to battle with neither able to gain more than a two-point advantage until the match became tied at 24-24. A kill by Nesheva followed by a Golden Eagle attacking error secured the 26-24 victory for the Blue Raiders.

Lindsey Wilson again got off to a hot start in set two, building a 9-3 advantage after a pair of Nesheva kills and a block. The Blue Raiders would continue to build their lead to as many as 11 points before a Liutikova kill and Cornerstone attacking error gave the set to Lindsey Wilson, 25-14.

In set three, the match was tied at 2-2 before a 9-0 Lindsey Wilson run made it 11-2. The Golden Eagles were able to cut the lead to seven at 20-13, but five-straight points capped off by a pair of Cline kills captured the set and the match for the Blue Raiders.

Cline led the way offensively with 10 kills on 15 swings for a .667 attacking percentage. Liutikova added nine with Shilling and Nesheva each recording eight. Montano finished with 26 assists while three Blue Raiders reached double-digit digs including King (15) Alexa Just (11) and Kellie Ranney (10).

Lindsey Wilson hit .280 as a team and recorded 6.0 total blocks.

The Golden Eagles struggled offensively hitting just .108 as a team while committing 21 attacking errors and nine service errors. Megan Newhouse led with seven kills while Amber Carmean had 19 digs.
