Pursuit on KY 206 ends with Jaguar in soybean field, a tazering

Late evening traffic stop by Columbia Police officers led to vehicle pursuit and arrest of an Adair County man on multiple charges.

On Sunday evening, August 17, 2014, at approximately 6:37pmCT, CPD Ofc. Josh Brockman assisted by Ofc. Jordan Dean initiated a traffic stop on a 1998 Jaguar for reckless driving and multiple driving violations on several city streets.

The driver was ask to exit the vehicle and speak with officers. At that point the operator refused, put the car back into gear and sped off through parking lot where several students were present.



Officers pursued vehicle onto KY 206. The operator of the vehicle lost control of his vehicle and slid off roadway into a soybean field 3 miles east of Columbia. The driver, who appeared uninjured, then became combative with officers and refused to exit the vehicle resulting in the deployment of a tazer. The operator was then taken into custody without any further incident.

Adair County EMS responded to scene as a precautionary measure and treatment was refused by operator.

Thomas Cheaney, age 54 of Columbia, KY, was arrested by Ofc. Brockman and charged with Reckless Driving, Failure to Signal, Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol 3rd offense (Aggravated Circumstances), Fleeing and Evading Police 1st Degree Motor Vehicle, Wanton Endangerment 2nd Degree (4 counts) Failure to Wear Seatbelts , Resisting Arrest, Failure to Produce Insurance Security, and Possession of Open Alcoholic Beverage in Vehicle Prohibited.

Cheaney was lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail, Columbia, KY.

Columbia Police were assisted in the pursuit by deputies with the Adair County Sheriff's Department. Ofc. Josh Brockman
