Disagrees with BJF for calling thoughtless driver 'gentleman' Walkable City commentary notes. For ColumbiaMagazine.com, our primary concern in advocating a Walkable Downtown is economic, the viability of the businesses downtown, the economic benefits to be derived. The health and safety factors are important too. This letter is, in part, pro-Walkable City, but asks for pedestrians to take greater responsibility for their own safety. - EW Billy Joe Fudge: Yesterday, woman almost run down in crosswalk By Sena Schaefer Personal commentary I agree with comments made by Billy Joe Fudge except that he called the truck driver a gentleman. I think that the driver should have been referred to as a man since a true gentleman would have stopped for anyone in a crosswalk. I, too, am concerned about how many pedestrians don't seem to pay any attention to traffic before walking across a street. I have had people walking out in front of my car on Saturday when the Farmers Market is open. This has happened several times in recent months. The people are leaving the market area and crossing Greensburg Street to get in their car. I had full view of them from the time they left the market. They never looked in my direction before crossing the street. I was fortunate enough to have enough time and distance to reduce my speed and prevent an accident. Unfortunately, because this has happened to me too many times, I now totally avoid this area on Saturday morning. - Sena Schaefer This story was posted on 2014-08-08 09:25:46
