A bachelor's degree in nursing designed to meet expected increased demand in for nurses with four year degree, school officials say, announcing new internet program Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Duane Bonifer, Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - Registered nurses can earn a baccalaureate degree in nursing in 18 months through a new online program being started at Lindsey Wilson College. The program, which will begin this fall, was created to help registered nurses advance their careers, according to Lindsey Wilson Nursing Division Chair Dr. Marian Smith. "This is a perfect program for nurses who have an associate degree in nursing and want to pursue a baccalaureate program in nursing so that they can open more career possibilities," Smith said. "The curriculum is very forward-thinking. The coursework is not just repeating what students had in their associate's degree program, but instead it moves them into opportunities to get into management and leadership positions." Nursing education veteran Dr. Tracey Gaslin, who has been named to direct LWC's online program, said there is a growing need for nurses with baccalaureate degrees. "Numerous recent studies have shown there is going to be a significant need for baccalaureate-prepared nurses," she said. "Many hospitals who hope to achieve 'Magnet' status are required to have a certain percentage of their nurses at the baccalaureate level." A hospital receives "Magnet" status from the American Nurses Association's American Nurses Credential Center for meeting standards for quality of patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. The designation helps hospitals attract high-quality nurses. But Gaslin said nurses will get more than a career boost from Lindsey Wilson's new online nursing program. "This program will give nurses some great new ideas and content, and it will also grow them in their profession and what they do in the clinical setting," Gaslin said. "This program is exciting because the curriculum is something that is more than just jumping through the hoops in order to get a baccalaureate degree. We want students to walk away from each class experience saying, 'Wow that was empowering and enlightening for my nursing practice.'"
