Civil War Veterans Added to Veterans List

Over the past few weeks several additional Civil War soldiers were identified as being citizens of Adair County. Here is a brief paragraph on each of these men, forwarded also to the Veterans List of Columbia Magazine. More and more veterans of Adair County, by birth or choice, are being identified and will be submitted for the list from time to time.


Doctor "Dock" McClure, private, Company A, 108 U.S. Colored Infantry, enlisted 9 August 1864 Lebanon, KY, mustered same date and place; description upon enlistment: age 19, 5 feet 9 inches, born Russell County, farmer, belonged to Aaron McClure, Russell County; mustered out 21 May 1866 Vicksburg, Mississippi; resided near Columbia in 1900, pensioner.

Jeremiah "Jerry" Powell, private and wagoner, Company A, 3 KY Infantry, enrolled 12 August 1861 Camp Dick Robinson, age 19, mustered 8 October 1861 Camp Dick Robinson; detailed as teamster at Murfreesboro, TN 24 July 1863; killed in Battle of Chattanooga 25 November 1863, in assault on Missionary Ridge; description upon death: born Adair County, age at enrollment 19, dark complexion, black eyes, dark hair, 5 feet 7 inches, farmer. Jeremiah Powell, age 18, born Adair, in household of James and Franky Powell in 1860 Adair County census.

Thompson Powell, private, Company A, 3 KY Infantry, enrolled 19 September 1861 Camp Dick Robinson, age 30, mustered 8 October 1861 Camp Dick Robinson; mustered out 13 October 1864 Louisville, KY; son of James Powell and Frances Sanders. Thompson Powell, age 30, born Adair County, in 1860 Adair County census.

William B. Powell, private, Company A, 3 KY Infantry, enrolled 19 September 1861 Camp Dick Robinson, age "39", mustered 8 October 1861; discharged on Surgeon's Certificate of disability at Murfreesboro, TN 26 March 1863; description from discharge: born Adair County, age "thirty-one", dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, 5 feet 9
