Billy Joe Fudge: Two deaths on the Square is two, too many

"Cars and trucks can be lethal weapons and should be operated with the greatest of caution, especially within areas with heavy pedestrian traffic' - BILLY JOE FUDGE

By Billy Joe Fudge
Personal Commentary

There have been two people lying dead upon our Downtown Square since the middle 70's.

That is two, too many.

Both deaths could have been prevented.

All involved drivers could have slowed to a speed which would have allowed them to view the paths of their vehicles in order to safely proceed.

Pedestrians should act responsibly and seek to avoid compromising situations.

However, cars and trucks can be lethal weapons and should be operated with the greatest of caution, especially within areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.

The goal is not to inconvenience motorists but to create an atmosphere of safety and comfort in our Downtown. An atmosphere which will be conducive to allowing the Downtown area to once again become the cultural and commercial center of our community.

No man is an island and we are indeed, our brother's keeper.

Therefore, let us pursue policies as a city, county and community that will bring about a spirit of cooperation between business owners, building owners, city government, county government, state government, civic organizations and all our citizenry.

Let us take the "I" off our backs and the "me" off our chests, pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and conquer this recession, downtown malaise, political and personal bickering before they conquer us.

--Billy Joe Fudge
