News from Lindsey Wilson College

Lindsey Wilson College will begin a graduate program this fall in interactive design. The 36-hour program -- which will cost about $17,000 and take about 22 months to complete -- will be offered almost entirely online.

The master's degree in interactive design will help working professionals enhance their skills and open opportunities to students who want to expand their work in the profession, according to Professor of Art David Meyers, who is program coordinator.

"The program's goal is to provide students with leading-edge training, quality graduate education and professional development in interactive design, new media and technology," Meyers said.

Meyers said students will "cover a lot of the skills needed to develop new media for smart phones and tablets, as well as web development."

Meyers said the ideal student will come from the professions of advertising, communication, graphic design, journalism or marketing.

"The program will focus on the aesthetic, human and technical sides of design," Meyers said. "We want students to understand that they need to create pieces that don't only look nice and function well technically but are also grounded in planning, research and user-testing."

Meyers said the graduate program was designed to take a little less than two years to complete so that students could "work while learning." All of the classes will be taught online, and two one-week residencies at the liberal arts college's A.P. White Campus in Columbia will be required.

"During each one-week residency, students will interact with one another in person and give their final presentations to classmates and faculty," Meyers said. "We also hope to have guest speakers from the industry to discuss some of the latest trends and developments in interactive design."

Meyers said that what makes the Lindsey Wilson interactive design program especially strong is that it is "on the edge."

"A lot of programs are anywhere from three to five years behind the curve in terms of what the industry needs, but this program is right on the edge of what's happening in the profession," he said.

Meyers has more than 25 years of experience as an artist and educator.

"I've always been an enthusiast with digital media," he said. "Since 1984, when the first Macintosh computer was released, I was one of the first guys standing in line to get one. So even though I have a fine arts background, I've always kept one foot in the digital world as well."
