Vonnie Kolbenschlag: Notes decision to remove Parson House City approves use of eminent domain for Parson House By Vonnie Kolbenschlag Many years ago, when Columbia was just beginning, the city paid for land to become a city cemetery, in the same place it is today. The present cemetery has expanded since then, but the original deed exists in a large record book, handwritten in beautiful script by William Caldwell, Columbia's first clerk. The deed states that the cemetery is to have a chapel, and if one is not built, the land is to be returned to the owner. That did not happen. However, they did not stipulate a time period. Building a chapel in the cemetery seems logical because the churches in the city did not have space for a cemetery and cemeteries - then referred to as 'graveyards" - were usually next to a church. There are beautiful outdoor chapel designs. Maybe people from all our denominations, led by the ministerial association, could help build a chapel, contributing time, labor and money in an ecumenical effort - just as the early founders of our town hoped. - Vonnie Kolbenschlag This story was posted on 2014-05-05 21:34:46
