Reed Adair County School District, Columbia, KY In recent days there has been much discussion over the last day of school for students in Adair County as a result of many snowy and icy days this winter...Legislators in Frankfort have also been debating how to address the snow days as well as how this would impact each school district in the state. The latest piece of legislation was formally approved last week and here is how it will affect the Adair County Schools calendar. The bill that was passed will grant school districts a waiver, for this year only, that will allow districts to have schools open on Primary Election Day as long as no school is used as a polling place...None of our schools are used as a polling place...As a result of this waiver Adair County Schools will be in session on the Primary Election Day of May 20, 2014. By state law public schools in Kentucky are required to have 170 instructional days and meet a requirement of having 1,062 instructional hours... The recently passed bill will grant a one-time waiver for schools to go below the 170 instructional day mark as long as they still meet the 1,062 instructional hour mark. To achieve the minimum of 1,062 instructional hours for all the students of Adair County Schools we will be adding five (5) minutes to each school day beginning on Monday,May 5th...Beginning Monday, May 5th all schools will be releasing students at 2:50... These changes will have students attending 169 instructional days for a total of 1,063 instructional hours. Points of emphasis:
We feel that this is a good compromise between protecting valuable instructional time and getting students out in a timely manner. We now must sit back and see what challenges Mother Nature may bring us as spring arrives. We hope that our severe and hazardous weather is behind us for this school year so there are no more school calendar revisions. If you have any questions feel free to contact Robbie Harmon, Director of Pupil Personnel, at 270-384-2476 or you can contact me personally. We are all very grateful for the legislative relief and glad that we can end the school year by the end of May, 2014. Sincerely, Alan W.
