LWC gets $80,000 Kosair grant to help area children Funds will support pediatric partnership between nursing program at LWC and Center for Courageous Kids at Scottsville Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Duane Bonifer News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - Lindsey Wilson College has received an $80,000 grant from Kosair Charities of Louisville, KY. The grant will be used to support a pediatric partnership between the college's baccalaureate nursing program and the Center for Courageous Kids of Scottsville, KY, and develop an initiative that will provide nutrition information to area Latino families through outreach efforts by LWC students. "I'm really grateful to Kosair Charities for providing this opportunity for our students to continue to reach out to the community and make a difference in people's lives," said Lindsey Wilson Vice President for Academic Affairs Bettie Starr. Kosair Charities board member Robert Flowers of Columbia said he was glad the organization could help programs that will change the lives of children in Southcentral Kentucky. "It's nice to get to write the checks to Lindsey Wilson College and this work they are doing," said Flowers, who also serves as the treasurer for the Kosair Charities Board of Directors. "It's nice to get the word out in Southcentral Kentucky that Kosair Charities is here to help." Through a partnership with Center for Courageous Kids, students in LWC's baccalaureate nursing program work with seriously ill children who attend the camp. LWC nursing students assist children who have physical disabilities, diabetes, hematology/juvenile arthritis and spina bifida. "This grant allows us to continue to extend those outreach opportunities in this area," said LWC Nursing Division Chair Marian Smith. "There are just lots of streams that can flow into the opportunities it will provide to Lindsey Wilson students to be exposed to pediatric patients." The Kosair Charities grant will also fund a cooperative effort by the LWC nursing division, education division and Florece en Lindsey ("Flourishing at Lindsey") to offer nutrition courses to Latino students who participate in Adair County Schools' literacy program. The program will be launched in the fall, Starr said. "Nutrition is a family issue -- the children don't prepare their own meals, so families have to understand what goes into healthy living and a healthy diet," Starr said. "This is a great opportunity to shape our nursing curriculum, the curriculum for other students, and also to have an immediate impact on vulnerable families and students in our community." Smith said Columbia-Adair County residents have enjoyed a longtime partnership with Kosair Charities.
