TOPEKA, KS - For the first-time in program history, Lindsey Wilson is coming home with two NAIA Wrestling National Champions in Joe Cozart and Jameel Bryant after the conclusion of the championships at the Kansas Expocentre Saturday night, March 8, 2014.

Cozart, who has been ranked No. 1 at 157 pounds all season, earned his way into the finals on Saturday night after a grueling battle in the morning session. Cozart found himself facing Quinten Hayes of Grand View (Iowa) who ranks No. 2 in the semifinal round. The pair needed extra time to decide a winner after the match was tied 4-4 after three periods. Cozart was ready from the start and took Hayes down for the win and secured a spot in the finals.

"When we went to overtime, it was me trusting myself and the coaches," Cozart said. "I knew I was ready for it and if it went into overtime we had a plan in place. All I needed to do was perform like I knew I could and it turned out great."

Cozart met No. 6 Dallas Houchins of Grand View in the title match. After a scoreless first period, Cozart used an escape and a takedown in the second period to build a 3-0 lead. A pair of escapes by Houchins in the second and third period brought the score to 3-2 before Cozart added another takedown for the 5-2 lead. Houchins escaped again but Cozart was able to fend off any takedown attempts, sealing the 5-3 decision win for the Blue Raider.

"The feeling is just surreal," Cozart explained. "All the way from last year when I took second place, that feeling was something I really did not like. So I busted my butt the entire year just to get that championship feeling and I still can't believe it. It's just overwhelming."

Bryant, who has been ranked No. 1 at 184 pounds all season, won his semifinal match in the morning session with a close 3-2 decision over No. 4 Christian Mays of Grand View.

In the finals, Bryant ran into a familiar foe in No. 2 Cody Linton of Cumberland (Tenn.). Bryant and Linton had faced off twice already this season with Bryant winning 3-2 in the Lindsey Wilson-Cumberland Dual on Feb. 4 and winning 5-3 in the finals of the NAIA East Qualifier on February 22, 2014.

"I've wrestled him multiple times before so I knew exactly what he was trying to do and what I needed to do," Bryant said. "I knew I had to get out front with an early lead to beat him."

Bryant scored the first points of the match with a takedown, but a quick Linton escape cut the lead to 2-1. Linton was able to gain control and scored two points for the 3-2 lead. Bryant used an escape to tie the match 3-3. After starting in the down position in period two, Bryant escaped to take a 4-3 advantage and added a crucial takedown to extend his lead to 6-3. Linton would escape in the second period and after starting in the down position in period three, escape again to cut the lead to 6-5. Bryant was able to hold off the takedown attempts by Linton and claim his second 184 pound national title by a score of 6-5.

"Last year when I first won my emotions hit me pretty hard, but this year I felt like I deserved it because of all the time I've put into it over the entire year," Bryant said. "I just made sure I did what was necessary to wrap up a two-time national championship."

With the win, Bryant becomes the program's first ever two-time national champion. The Lindsey Wilson wrestling program has now had four individual national champions including two by Bryant, one by Cozart and one by Charlie Pingleton.

Three other Blue Raiders secured All-American status with their performances at the championships.

No. 3 at 141 pounds Wismit Moinius suffered a pin at the hands of Cameron Neiss from Morningside (Iowa) who ranks fourth at 141 pounds. Monius bounced back with a 2-0 decision win over No. 9 Jason Arreola of York (Neb.) to claim seventh place.

Erick Gomez, who ranks 15th at 174 pounds, earned his trip to the national championships with an at-large bid. After battling his way through the tournament, Gomez suffered a 5-3 loss to Joe Cruz of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) in the consolations. He then won due to injury forfeit by No. 7 Anthony Pike of Briar Cliff (Iowa) to finish the championships at seventh place.

Jahwon Akui suffered a 12-0 major decision to No. 2 Charles Johnson of Southern Oregon before falling via technical fall to Eric Johnson of Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) to finish in eighth place.

Lindsey Wilson finished in fifth place as a team at the championships after recording 73.5 points.

Grand View won the team national championship for the third-straight year with a score of 193.0 points. Great Falls (Iowa) took second with 84.5 points and Montana State Northern took third with 83.5 points. Southern Oregon was fourth with 80.5 points.

"It was a definitely a season of new heights and we have a lot to build off of," said Lindsey Wilson wrestling coach Corey Ruff. "The first time we have had multiple champions, our first two-time champion and a second-place finish at national duals. It's good to always be building up."

"There are not a whole lot of programs that can say they have had 15 All-Americans, seven guys in the national finals and four national champions."

"It's gratifying, there's no doubt about it," Ruff explained. "When I think about who put the most time in on the mat from last year to this year, hands down it's the two guys on top of the podium. It's no mistake. It's not luck. It's time, persistence and dedication. They deserve it and they've earned it." - CHARLES BALCOM, Lindsey Wilson College
