By Charles Balcom Special to ColumbiaMagazine.com TOPEKA, KS - Two Blue Raiders are still in the hunt for a national title after the second session of the 2014 NAIA Wrestling National Championships on Friday night at the Kansas Expocentre. Top-ranked at 157 (rankings in this story are NAIA) Joe Cozart and top-ranked at 184 Jameel Bryant can still claim a national championship after advancing to the final four. Cozart opened his day with a win over No. 12 Nico Martinez of Missouri Valley after Martinez took an injury forfeit at the 3:47 mark in the match. Cozart then went on to pin No. 15 Jordan Langley of Morningside (Iowa) to advance to the final four. He faces No. 2 Quinten Hayes of Grand View (Iowa) in his next match. Bryant began his tournament with a close 6-5 decision over No. 13 Parker Owen of Baker (KS). He followed that win with an 8-4 victory over No. 12 Rulin Pederson of Morningside to advance to the semifinals. He now faces Christian Mays of Grand View who ranks fourth at 184 pounds. Three other Blue Raiders are still alive in the tournament. No. 3 Wismit Moinius won his first match at the 141 weight class with a 5-3 decision over Garret Lambrecht of Morningside. He then suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 16 Brandon Westerman of Campbellsville (KY) to fall into the consolation bracket. Moinius defeated Alec Chanthapathe of Hastings (NE) with a 7-4 decision and now faces No. 4 Cameron Neiss of Montana State Northern. No. 15 Erick Gomez recorded a 15-4 major decision over No. 14 Ishmael Rempson of William Penn (Iowa), but suffered a 4-0 loss to No. 3 Brady Beamon of Simpson (Calif.) in his next match. Gomez then pinned No. 10 Austin Fehlhafer of Concordia (Neb.) and defeated No. 8 LJ Grayson of Indiana Tech in a 13-1 major decision in his next match of the wrestlebacks. Gomez now faces No. 15 Jose Cruz of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at the 174 weight class. No. 7 at 197 Jahwon Akui opened his tournament with a 4-2 win over No. 14 Taylor Baird of Bethany (KS). He then recorded a 3-1 overtime win over No. 8 Garrett DeMers of Montana State Northern before suffering a 3-1 overtime loss to No. 3 Josh Manu of Missouri Valley. Akui opened the consolation bracket with a 3-2 win over No. 10 AJ Mott of Grand View. He will face No. 2 Charles Johnson of Southern Oregon in his next match. All five Lindsey Wilson grapplers still alive at the championships will earn All-American status for placing in the top eight. Sixth-ranked at 133 pounds Keaton Thomas suffered a 7-6 loss to Scottie Bonds of William Penn. Thomas began his battle in the consolation bracket starting with a 10-2 major decision over Kodie Cole of Concordia. He then defeated No. 12 Raymond McQueen of Waldorf (Iowa) with a 7-6 decision. Thomas suffered a close 6-5 decision to No. 4 Brandon Benvenuti of Grand View in the wrestlebacks, ending his tournament. No. 7 Isaac Thomas began his day with a 12-4 major decision over No. 8 Tyler Boyer of Midland (NE) and fell just short of upsetting No. 1 Colby Crank of Bethany. Thomas suffered a takedown in overtime to give Crank the 6-4 win. Thomas then suffered a 5-1 loss to No. 3 Jake Ekster of Missouri Valley in the consolation bracket, ending his tournament run. No. 16 Stephen Myers suffered a 5-4 loss to No. 5 Tyler Lashbrook of Morningside which dropped him into the consolation bracket. He bounced back with a 7-4 win over No. 11 Ricky McCarty of Oklahoma City, but fell 4-2 in overtime to Nick Haugen of Baker to end his day. No. 4 Myron Bradbury fell in his opening match at 125 pounds 4-1 to No. 9 Oscar Marin of York (Neb.). He then suffered a 5-4 loss to Luke Schlessler of Great Falls (Mont.) in the consolation bracket, ending his tournament. Lindsey Wilson currently sits in a tie for fourth place in the team standings with 47.5 points along with Southern Oregon. Grand View sits atop the team leaderboard standings with 113.0 total points.
