An open letter on School Calendar adjustments from Supt. Reed

'Tentative planning is for school to close no later than the first week in June. 'My own desire is to keep Spring Break intact yet allow our district to wrap up not later than the first week in June. At this time there is nothing concrete.' - SUPT. ALAN W. REED

Good morning, readers of ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Everywhere I go I receive questions on some sort of calendar relief (bet you are surprised). Right this minute there are five bills aimed at offering calendar relief to schools due to the extremely harsh winter; there could be one or two more bills filed in the final days of the legislative session. While it appears some relief will be given, what kind and when remains a mystery.

Central Office administration is working on a proposal that could potentially shorten this year's school calendar by two days (170 instructional days), the state minimum allowed. We may be asking the Adair County Board of Education to grant a one-time request that would allow this to happen, provided there are no budget impacts. My own desire is to keep Spring Break intact yet allow our district to wrap up not later than the first week in June. At this time there is nothing concrete.

I will continue to follow the legislative process closely and will communicate any actions to all parents and shareholders immediately. We don't want anyone to be left in the dark.

Meanwhile I want to again thanks our dedicated staff of bus drivers, maintenance department workers, and custodial staff for their hard work in snow removal in order for us to get back in session after, what we hope, is the final winter blast. I also want to give a shout out to our teachers and principals who are particularly stressed as they re-focus students on academics and testing.

I also want to thank CM readers and the community for support of our school system. We are improving by leaps and bounds, yet there is so much more for us to do in the process of continuous improvement. As I made my rounds this morning I can assure you that everyone is thrilled to once again be back to work on a campus alive with the presence of students.

Let's just hope there are no more interruptions.
