The Adair County Indians defeated the Marion County Knights 61-60 last night in the first round of the boys 20th district tournament at The Robey Dome in Lebanon. Senior forward Ty Bennett connected on a three pointer as time expired giving the Indians their 17th win of the season. The Knights closed out their year with a 19-8 record.

The Knights led 19-6 after the first period and appeared to be on their way to an easy win as they took a 26-8 lead early in the second period. The Tribe went on a 22-6 run to close out the first half and pulled within 32-30 by halftime. Senior point guard Matt Fudge scored 13 second period points including 11 for 11 from the charity stripe and Ty Bennett scored 9 points during the same stretch on 3 treys.

The Knights tried to pull away again in the third period connecting on three back to back treys to go up 41-30 with 6:10 remaining. Once again the Indians show resilience out scoring the Knights 12-3 to pull within 44-42 after three periods. Freshman forward Chance Melton scored 7 points and Bennett 5 points during the stretch.

Melton took over the scoring load in the final period scoring 12 fourth quarter points before fouling out on back to back phantom fouls. Both teams traded baskets and leads before Marion County found themselves leading 59-58 with two free throws and 5 seconds remaining. The Knights connected on the second attempt to go up 60-58. The Indians inbounded the ball to Fudge who was fouled in the front court before he could get off a shot leaving 1.8 seconds remaining. Both teams used 30 second timeouts setting the stage for Bennett's heroics. Sophomore forward Jacob Pooler and junior guard Zach Hutchison set perfect screens and senior forward Jake Hixson delivered a perfect pass allowing Bennett to release the game winner just before the horn sounded giving the Indians the victory.

Melton paced the Indians with a double/double scoring 25 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Melton also scored his 1000 career point early in the third period. Rounding out the scoring were Bennett with 19 points and Fudge with 17 points. Hutchison and Bennett had four rebounds each and Fudge handed out 6 assists.
