COLUMBIA, KY - Lindsey Wilson College religion instructor Cinda Swan held "The Hunger Games" Tuesday afternoon, February 18, 2014.

During the weekly meeting of Swan's "Social Justice" undergraduate seminar in Goodhue Academic Building, the class was divided proportionally into three groups: developed countries, newly industrialized countries and developing countries. Each group was given an amount of food that reflected the annual consumption by that segment of the world.

Students sent into developing nations -- which include about 60 percent of the world population -- were given about a cup of rice. Students in newly industrialized countries -- which include about 30 percent of the world population -- were given a basic meal of rice, tortillas and a vegetable. The lone student assigned to the developed countries -- which account for about 10 percent of the world population -- was treated to a dinner of baked chicken, vegetables, lasagna and dessert.

The purpose of the exercise was to illustrate the imbalance of food distribution in the world. - DUANE BONIFER, Lindsey Wilson College.
