Poetry by Robert Stone: Hope that I embrace

Hope that I embrace
- a villanelle for the birthday of Clara Elizabeth Ellis
While I have never seen you face to face,
to know the sound of voice, the words you choose,
to meet at last is hope that I embrace.

No other wishes will this wish displace
to pay with thanks as deficit accrues
while I have never seen you face to face.

Procrastination much delays my race
to show the trembling truth my heart pursues
to meet at last is hope that I embrace.

I would desire flame up and set a pace
to catch up laps long lost without excuse
while I have never seen you face to face.

Between us is so far unmeasured
to foster expectations of a ruse
to meet at last is hope that I embrace.

Intentions have not changed in this my chase
to color future bright with rainbow hues
while I have never seen you face to face
to meet at last is hope that I embrace.
- Robert Stone, 11 February 2014
