GEORGETOWN, KY - No. 5 Campbellsville and No. 8 Georgetown College met up Saturday in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Game of the Week, as CU won, 85-71.

The CU Lady Tigers entered the 90th meeting between the two teams seeking revenge from a Jan. 9 loss. Campbellsvile led for all but three minutes in the game, but Georgetown didn't fall easily. CU held off a late 18-5 run by the host Tigers from the 4:01 to 1:37 mark of the game.

Campbellsville, which opened the game on a 6-0 run, closed it with a 7-0 run to take a two-game lead in the Mid-South Conference standings.

"Having a two game lead is nothing in this conference," said CU Lady Tiger head coach Ginger Colvin. "We have some big games left on our schedule, and they are not easy games. This was a big game today, as we beat an unbelievably good team on their home court. We wanted to get a little revenge back after they beat us earlier at home. If we play like we did today, then we will definitely be hard to beat the rest of the season."

Campbellsville opened the first half on fire. Senior Ellen Sholtes recorded a steal on the opening possession and converted it into a coast-to-coast layup and old-fashioned 3-point play. Fellow senior Katie Allen hit her first of four 3-pointers in the game to give CU a three-possession lead in the first 30 seconds.

Georgetown took advantage of some sloppy play and picked up three steals during a 7-0 run to gain its first lead of the game with 15:45 left to play in the first half. Hayley Hellyer temporarily ended CU's skid with a jumper to go back up 8-7, but Georgetown's Jessica Foster tilted the scoreboard back to GC, 9-8. Foster scored seven of the host Tigers' first nine and finished with points.

Hellyer later regained the lead, 13-11, for Campbellsville a second time, this time with a 15-foot jumper at the 12:45 mark. The jumper sparked a 9-0 run, which included a steal and assist from Allen to Daizah Kimberland, a breakaway layup by Allen and steal and assist by LeeAnn Grider for a Caroline Owen 3.

Campbellsville never trailed again.

CU's largest first-half lead was 10 points, 23-13, after an Allen 3-pointer, but Georgetown's Andrea Howard matched it. Teonia McCune scored on an offensive put back to reduce CU's lead back to two possessions, 23-18.

Kourtney Tyra later received a pass from Haley Armstrong and knocked down her second 3-pointer in less than minute to pull within four, 30-26, with 3:35 left. With 28 seconds left in the half, Devanny King cut it two, 33-31, as Georgetown entered halftime on an 8-3 run. Campbellsville did not score in the final 2:49 of the half.

"When two teams are as good as both of us are, then it will be a game of runs and they had a good run to end the half," said Colvin. "Neither team got rattled, and it was a great back-and-fourth game for the first 20 minutes."

Forty seconds into the second half, Lizza Jonas picked up her third and fourth personal fouls on back-to-back possessions, sending her to the bench.

Sholtes went right to work for CU with Jonas out of the game and scored seven quick points to give CU a 39-33 lead with 17:50 left.

With Jonas out of the lineup for GC, third-year head coach Andrea McCloskey switched Georgetown back to the 2-3 zone. But that did not keep Campbellsville from extending its lead to 49-35 on what became a 16-4 run.

Sholtes, who had her first career double-double Thursday night with 20 points and 10 rebounds at University of the Cumberlands, scored nine in the run and finished with a game-high 19 points, while Kimberland scored five in the run and Hellery pitched in two more.

Sholtes and Kimberland combined for 17 of CU's 26 points midway in the second half. The two combined for 37 points in the game as Kimberland scored 18. Allen finished with 19, a career-best against Georgetown, on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor and 4-for-6 behind the arc.

"Our seniors stepped up and played very well," said Colvin. "Ellen was able to get to the rim and Mary Jehlik also played great although the stats did not show it. Her defense was spectacular and helped us more then it shows. Katie showed a lot of emotion in the opening huddle and it showed by hitting big shots throughout the game."

Kimberland gave CU its largest lead of the game at 18 points, 73-55, with 5:42 to play. The junior from Bardstown, Ky., shot 7-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe in only 24 minutes of play, as she was taken out numerous times for three-to-four minute stretches.

"We had to stop 3 or 4 times on the way here because Daizah was so sick," said Colvin "She played the best today as she has all season, and she was sick. That shows a lot about her courage and want-to on the court."

But Georgetown did not give up late as the home Tigers went on their biggest run of the game to cut the lead to single-digits at 78-69 with 1:48, but Campbellsville responded with a 7-0 run before King scored a basket to close the game.

King led Georgetown with 18 points, as Foster and Tyra both chipped in 15 points. Howard, GC's leading scorer, who scored 28 in the January meeting in Campbellsville, was held to only five points in the game.

"Howard is a great player," said Colvin. "We lost her in transition when we played earlier in the year and she hurt us. But today we held her in check." Women's basketball: Campbellsville will host Rio Grande at Powell Athletic Center, 203 Tiger Way, Campbellsville KY 42718, on at 5pmCT/6pmET, Thursday, February 13, 2014 against the University of Rio Grande and again at 1pmCT/2pmET, Saturday, February 15, 2014 to host Shawnee State University for Senior Day.
