Jon Halsey: What Ralph said was not an attack on anyone If I were to find myself in a serious budget crises and my CPA simply advised me to "earn more money", I doubt I would be telling my wife she needed to get a better job, but I would take a serious and hard look at all aspects of my total expenses and do without some of the things I would grievously miss. It seems to me that this is what RRW is making a case for. The original letter was addressing the Police Department only because of the public statements made by the Chief and was not an attack on that department but rather an indictment of the entire system which gives all indications of seeming to think that they can fund whatever they desire from some mysterious unending source of wealth. - JON HALSEY Comment about: We need the Paul Harvey of the story: City budget By Jon Halsey Personal commentary Living in the Greater Metropolitan Area of Knifley, I don't have a dog in this fight. However, RRW raises some good points and the responses seem to be "ad hominem" rather that addressing the serious budget issues he raised. The Feds have a nasty habit of issuing Grants (with conditions) and local Government entities have a nasty habit of taking those Grants and expanding the services they offer. When those Grants are no longer available - which ALWAYS happens, the hue and cry is raised about "cutting services" and the local taxpayer picks up the price. As to the Retirement issue, I don't see that Ralph is suggesting that the police be denied retirement but rather he questions how it will be paid for when the annual money put in to the program is inadequate to cover the retirement pay due. If I only have five dollars, I can't give you seven dollars no matter how much you deserve it! Both commentators seem to ignore the serious need to focus on all aspects of all local government budgets and the criticality of doing it PDQ. Hiring an outside firm to rubber stamp what you have already decided to do in not an answer. Westlake is a prime example of the folly of "outside consultants" and what can be accomplished by locals applying sound financial practices.
