Remembering Kody: Community has lost part of its heart 'The Adair County School District lost part of its heart with Kody's passing last week. On a larger scale, our community lost part of its heart as well. Kody brought out the best in all of us. Kody was living proof that the more we love, the more love we have to give. I hope we will always remember this simple truth that Kody lived. - ALAN W. REED Comments about Kody Pelly, 23, Columbia, KY (1990-2013) By Alan W. Reed Personal commentary I want to share with you and the readers of CM some of my own special memories of our dear friend, Kody Pelley. Kody completed his program of studies a few years back, but missed his school family and interacting with students. I'm not sure who reached out to whom, but Kody signed up to be a volunteer. Kody's home base was Ms. Missy Garmon's special needs classroom at Adair County Elementary School. He was present every Wednesday to help other students with tasks they were assigned, and he also assisted many other teachers in the school with projects they were working on. Kody was great help. Each Wednesday, Kody picked up his name badge just like any other volunteer and he wore it with great pride. I'll never forget when I first met Cody I first met Kody in 1998 when I was principal at Col. Wm. Casey Elementary School. I don't remember a day passing without a big hug from him. I can tell you that there were many days when I needed that hug. I must admit that as much as Kody liked me, it was CWC's Assistant Principal, Don Neat, who was his favorite. Kody remembered me, as he did all of us, months later There have been times when I would not see Kody for months. Regardless, whenever I saw him at "Betty's" or on the school grounds, he would run up and say, "I know you! You're Mr. Reed!" We would talk about things going on in his life and about school. The Adair County School District lost part of its heart with Kody's passing last week. On a larger scale, our community lost part of its heart as well. Kody brought out the best in all of us. Kody was living proof that the more we love, the more love we have to give. I hope we will always remember this simple truth that Kody lived. And in so doing, Kody's big, big heart will continue to beat within the hearts of all of us. Sincerely, Alan W. Reed This story was posted on 2013-12-11 08:49:20
