Query: Union Soldiers Disposition in Columbia, KY re: /" Burrell Leonard Strange Sr., 9th Kentucky Calvary Company K, 1820 - 1863" Writer has found evidence that his great-great grandfather, a Union soldier from Anderson County, KY, died of disease in Columbia, KY, in 1863. He needs more information in order to obtain a military marker to go beside that of his great grandmother, who is buried in a small cemetery in Anderson County, KY. By Ronald Coleman Strange I am in need of any documentation stating the disposition of the remains of Union soldiers who died of disease in the town of Columbia, Ky. in 1863. I'm looking for newspaper articles, town, state or federal government documents that discuss the disposition of their remains. I understand from my research, so far, that a large number of soldiers' remains who died of disease in Columbia, who were not identified, were buried in mass unmarked graves. After extensive research during the past year it appears that my Great-Great Grandfather was one of those soldiers. I have been trying to obtain a headstone from the Department of Veterans Affairs in memory of his service and sacrifice. If I am successful it will be placed next to my Great-Great Grandmother, who I found buried in a small cemetery in Anderson county, Ky. in 1895. After many trips I found myself in Frankfort where I found nine pages of his service record. These documents contained his enlistment, his service and a death record showing that he died in the town of Columbia, Ky. on June 21st, 1863. There was no other documentation or information as to his remains. If my family had had the means to recover his body, which is doubtful, I'm sure they would have buried him where his wife was to be buried. Therefore, having no documentation of the disposition of his body I'm having to come to the conclusion that he was buried in a mass unmarked grave somewhere in the area. All of this information was sent to the Veterans Affairs Office. Whereas, they informed me that all of my research was inconclusive. They informed me that they needed written documentation as to how the remains of soldiers were disposed of in Columbia, Ky. in 1863. I would very much appreciate any information or documentation you or your readers could help me with, in this endeavor, of recognition and memory of my Gr.-Gr. Grandfather and his service to a government that lost him. I realize soldiers get lost in war but to have to battle for a headstone in his memory and sacrifice is difficult.
