Adair School Spotlight on: Barney Taylor, welding instructor Mr. Taylor is a lifelong resident of Adair County and graduated for ACHS in 1986. He is a very active member of Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church where he has taken on a leadership role as their Superintendant but is happiest working with the youth. Barney has been married to his wonderful wife, Nancy Baker Taylor, for 23 years and they have two children - 13 year old Hailey who attends ACMS and 9 year old Briley a student at ACES. Click on headline for complete Spotlight with photo(s) By Shamarie Claiborne, Media Publicity Director Adair County School District The Adair County School District is proud to spotlight Barney Taylor, welding instructor at Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center in Russell County which serves both Adair and Russell Counties. Mr. Taylor started teaching in 2004 after receiving his degree in technical education from Western Kentucky University. Prior to teaching, Mr. Taylor had gained hands-on experience in his area of expertise while working for Waste Energy Technology Construction Company, Taylor Services, and Sandusky Steel. Mr. Barney Taylor instructs students in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Oxy Fuel, and Plasma Cutting. When asked about his job Barney replied, "I do love teaching and being able to help the students learn a skill that they will carry with them for the rest of their life. I like helping my seniors earn their Kentucky Department of Transportation Welding Certification, which is a good credential to have when entering a technical school or to include on a job application". Mr. Taylor also addressed the job market and the skill set he provides. "Some of my students prefer to stay close to home, and they will get jobs with our local industries. However, some kids want to travel and see the world. When they do, I advise them to further their skill level by attending Somerset Community College, Tulsa Welding School in Oklahoma or Florida, or Hobart Welding School in Ohio. I want to help my students succeed at whatever they choose to do in life, whether it's pursuing a college education, going to a technical school, or going directly into the workforce." When asked what was the most rewarding part of his job Mr. Taylor had this to say, " Recently, one of my previous students dropped by to see me while visiting home before returning to a lucrative welding position in North Dakota. He basically came back and told me 'Thank you, Mr. Taylor' I like knowing my instruction time and hopefully encouragement while in the classroom during the short time I have these students has helped in making their life after high school a better one." Mr. Taylor is quick to support and promote his school, Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center, and explained to me that they also offer classes in Automotive, Carpentry, Electrical, Health Science (Nursing), Industrial Maintenance (Robotics), and Machine Tool (CNC Machining). When asked about the Lake Cumberland Area Technology Center, Superintendant Alan Reed stated: "I love the technical school and I feel that it is technical education and industry certifications that are the future---more so than regular 4 year college degrees. Our best and our brightest will be fighting for spots in the area tech centers which are also part of Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). With that being said, we are currently asking for "Satellite Campus" status through Frankfort for ACHS in Health Sciences and I am working with Barney and others to add a high tech welding element to our branch campus designation. Our students are lucky to have someone with Mr. Taylor's skills and experience teaching them and we are hopeful for expansion in this area very soon."
