Jon Halsey opinion: A bit of gilding the lily in press releases

Comments re article 62897 More than 26000 enrolled in health coverage through kynect

By Jon Halsey
Personal opinion

Seems to be a bit of "Gilding the Lily" in this press release.

National media both print and broadcast report that Medicaid enrollment in Kentucky is up 80% since the first of the month.

That mirrors reports from other States running their own Exchanges. New York has 37,000 new enrollees but two-thirds opted for Medicaid rather than private plans offered thru the Affordable Health Care Act (AHCA). Washington State and Oregon are reporting similar numbers.

The KY press release only says 27000 signed up for plans and does not say how many were Medicaid and how many were AHCA private plans.

As an increasing number of employers drop Health Care Insurance so their employees can enroll in the AHCA it seems apparent that these numbers will increase.

With Medicaid being "free" (to the user) and only small numbers signing up for the private plans, it also seems apparent that a "dark opportunity" is looming on the horizon.
