GLASGOW, KY - October 18, 2013 - In the four years that the WKU Sisterhood has awarded grant funds to various organizations and causes throughout the WKU community, no one from a WKU regional campus ever applied. That streak ended last Tuesday when WKU-Glasgow student, Natalie Raymer, submitted a proposal. Although Raymer's proposal did not win a grant award, it was selected as one of six finalists out of over thirty proposals. In addition, Raymer, who made a formal presentation to the Sisterhood at a luncheon on Tuesday at the WKU Augenstein Alumni Center, was the first WKU student to ever do so.

"I was made aware of the WKU Sisterhood grant through a classmate of mine and decided to apply," says Raymer. "I wanted to do something to help our campus."

Raymer is one of roughly 2,500 students who are enrolled at the WKU-Glasgow Campus. WKU-Glasgow is one of three regional campuses of Western Kentucky University. It is also the largest regional campus, making up 15% of the entire WKU enrollment.

Raymer is the first and only WKU student to submit a proposal to the WKU Sisterhood. Her $30,000 grant proposal was for the WKU-Glasgow Writing Center and WKU-Glasgow Student Organizations, two areas that are important to her.

"I chose the WKU-Glasgow Writing Center because this is an invaluable service to students, and it is the only interdisciplinary writing center at Western Kentucky University. So, when I need assistance on writing in Chicago-style, I can go to the WKU-Glasgow Writing Center and receive that help," explained Raymer.

Raymer said that ultimately, many students utilize this service on campus, and it needs funds to operate. As for the student organizations, Raymer said this is something about which she is very passionate.

"If it were not for my involvement with the Glasgow Student Body Association, I would not have received an opportunity to present to the WKU Sisterhood, which even in this experience, it has taught me so much," says Raymer.

In the end, Raymer finished in a close second, but the outpouring of support and encouragement from members of the WKU Sisterhood left Raymer inspired to try again next year.

"It's inspirational to see a group of educated women like I saw in the WKU Sisterhood, the members of which are leaders in their communities, who want to positively contribute to the development and quality of all those who are served by Western Kentucky University," said Raymer. "They are great role models, and for me; they are inspiring. So, I'll be back next year with another, even stronger proposal."

Raymer also credited Chancellor of WKU-Glasgow, Dr. Sally Ray, Coordinator for Communications and Student Recruitment, Mr. John Roberts, Instructor of Psychology, Ms. Melanie Asriel, and Instructor of Communication, Ms. Patricia Witcher for helping and encouraging her as she prepared for the final presentation to the WKU Sisterhood membership.

The WKU Sisterhood is a group of women with shared values, who enjoy collaborating to advance the mission of WKU, according to the organization's website. Members pool their financial gifts and award funds to a limited number of university designations to maximize the impact of their philanthropy. A member may be as involved as she wishes, from serving in a leadership role to simply making her gift.
