COLUMBIA, KY - Less than three weeks after graduating the second half of its largest class in college history, Lindsey Wilson College welcomed the first installment of its Class of 2017 on Thursday.

= The college held the first of five EDGE days scheduled for the summer. EDGE -- which stands for education, development, growth and experience -- is a daylong orientation program for incoming freshmen. The day introduces freshmen to the LWC community and gives them opportunities to meet the college's faculty, staff and students.

Thursday's EDGE attracted 154 incoming freshmen. Two more will be held Friday and Saturday, then the final two will be July 26-27.

"EDGE represents the beginning of the next step in the journey of life for our incoming students," said LWC Student Activities Director Jayne Hopkins, who oversees EDGE. "Many students will meet other students and staff in their EDGE groups that they will stay connected with throughout their four years at LWC."

Hannah Hogue of Danville, KY, was one of those freshmen who was looking forward to meeting people. Hogue, who attended Thursday's EDGE day with her mother, Karen, graduated from Boyle County High School on Friday night. Six days later, she was already a college freshman.

"It's all happened very fast," Hogue said. "I'm a little nervous because I just feel like I'm going to be the awkward person. I don't like change that much."

Hogue said she was attracted to LWC because of the small campus and "family atmosphere." That also helped seal the deal for her mother.

"I was worried about her going to a bigger school in a bigger city," Karen Hogue said. "But I was very pleased when she decided to come (to LWC) instead."

In the morning, student EDGE leaders conducted team-building sessions that introduced freshmen to other new incoming students. They were also told about the 2013-14 common reading for freshmen, Kelsey Timmerman's Where am I Wearing: A Global Tour to the Countries, Factories, and People that Make Our Clothes.

"Part of our goal for you during your freshman year is to help you adjust to college, but we also want to introduce you to how to think critically about the world around you and issues that affect your life," Freshman Advisor Heather Davis told a group of freshmen in Goodhue Academic Building.

After lunch, incoming students and their parents convened in Biggers Sports Center to finalize financial-aid paperwork, receive a parking permit and library card, receive a class schedule, and view LWC's academic and extracurricular opportunities. - Duane Bonifer
