Picture of CWC Final Open House jogs memory

Writer remembers when old Columbia Graded & High School Building was condemned and Grade Center was moved to CWC, then a new building with a lot of advantages - but it was, at the time, a temporary move. The next year her class was back on Graded Hill

After seeing the picture from CWC's final open house, it just jogged my memory a bit.

When I was in 7th grade at Columbia Junior High (in old Columbia Grade Ctr/Columbia High School building), the old building was condemned.

As a result, we were moved to the new Col. Wm. Casey building for the remainder of the school year.

I remember this much...it was in the spring of 1962, my teacher was Mrs. Mary Houston Paxton, and we loved being in a brand new building and so close to the high school!

We could walk to band as opposed to being bused across town from the Jr. High as before.

The other 7th grade teachers were: Mrs. Anna Hutchison (my mother) and Mrs. Frances Stults.

One distinct memory I have is: carrying my desk from our classroom (upstairs to the left of the principal's office) down the stairs to a truck waiting for our desks to be loaded.

I am sure we did the same when we arrived @CWC and carried our desks to our NEW classroom. Mrs. Irene Reece was the principal and what an adventure this move must have been for her and all the other teachers that day!

That's about all I can recall at the present. I guess the other grades such as 8th, etc. were moved to the new bldg. as well, but I only remember about the three 7th grade classes.

I would be interested in hearing others' memories about the year we moved to a new school--only briefly--because when school started again in the fall we were back up on Graded Hill for our 8th grade.

The old school had been painted and redone and was once again safe for us! --Prudence Hutchison Westholm
