CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY- Love was in the air Tuesday night, February 12, 2013, for Grandview Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility residents and members of the Campbellsville University baseball and softball programs. Fifteen athletes took time off the diamond in order to participate in a Valentine's Day dance with the seniors.

The trip to Grandview was the second of the school year for the baseball team, who had members sing Christmas Carols to the clients in December.

Tiger baseball players who attended include: Shawn Sowders (Junction City, KY), Cole Hay (Horse Cave, KY), Brandon Arel (Elizabethtown, KY), Brandon Read (Bowling Green, KY), Josh Watts (Lexington, KY), Tyler Hinds (Elizabethtown, KY), and Matt Pelfry (Stanton, KY).

Lady Tiger softball players included: Courtney Turpin (Lawrenceburg, KY), Sara Paragon (Louisville, KY), Victoria Decker (Leitchfield, KY), Alyssa Barker (Frankfort, KY) Destiney Taul (Mt. Sterling, KY), Kennedy Shutter (Kankakee, IL), Zatoria Leavell (Hopkinsville, KY), Kelsi Pardue (Scottsville, KY) and Shelby Ray (Glasgow, KY). Grandview Director: Residents can't stop talking about it
Activities Director Karen Reed was amazed at the response of the residents the morning after the celebration.

"They can't stop talking about it," said Reed. "They have been going on and on all morning about how wonderful of a night it was with the students. The halls are full of chatter, and many residents are already asking to dance again this morning."

Around 20 residents, decked out in festive pink and red attire for the special occasion, welcomed the players into the room with a round of applause. Faces lit up on the seniors' faces as the students dispersed finding a dance partner for the night. Most of the residents got involved, dancing to everything from Elvis' "Can't Help Falling in Love" to the "Chicken Dance". Even wheelchair bound clients were a part of the fun, as their baseball "dates" spun them around the dance floor.

Lady Tiger softball members took the lead on songs like the "Electric Slide" and the "Cupid Shuffle," eventually getting more of the baseball boys to join in on the action.

Slow music gets observer teary eyed

When slow songs began playing, Reed couldn't help but get teary as members of both squads paired with residents.

"This is amazing," said Reed. "These students did not have to do this, but they wanted to. It is impossible not to see how compassionate they are. And the fact that they are athletes showing love like this says a lot. What a blessing."

A priceless moment for Tiger Brandon Arel

Freshman Tiger Brandon Arel thought the experience was priceless.

"I had such a good time at the nursing home," said Arel. "It was great to put a smile on those residents' faces and be a part of something like that. I know, many times, they probably don't have a lot of outside visitors so I'm sure the night meant a lot to them."

This week marks the first games of the season for both squads. - Jordan Cornett
