Principal asks for public and parent suggestions

Robbie Harmon, Principal
News from Adair County Elementary School

In response to the recent tragedy in Connecticut and our staff's ongoing goal to provide the most safe learning environment possible for ACES students, faculty and staff, we met to look over our day to day operations. We are always looking for ways to improve school security.

Monday, December 17, 2012, several district and school level administrators met and discussed areas of concern that we see within our district and schools. Later in the day ACES conducted a routine Emergency Drill that teaches our student the procedures if we ever had an intruder within our building. From this drill our staff members brought suggestions, concerns and questions to an after school meeting in which we addressed these areas of concern and took note of any suggestions. This meeting with faculty and staff members was very productive and allowed open lines of communication between parties following our Emergency Drill. This communication is meant to allow parents and community members to know that we are always looking to be proactive and preventative to any situation we may encounter as a school and district.

Our top priority each and every day is the safety of our students and staff. In response to this we are making a few adjustments to how we will operate. We also strive to have a welcoming atmosphere that students and parent alike enjoy entering into. These changes are not meant to jeopardize this feeling of welcoming but in turn are being added to make students, parents, staff and community more comfortable with our school safety programs.

For the past several years we have allowed parents to walk their preschool child to the classroom. We have decided to place a staff member at the student drop off area in the back hallway of the school to assist in walking preschool students to their classrooms. This change is not meant to exclude anyone from our school or our classrooms. It simply helps us ensure that we know who is inside our school buildings at all times. If you desire to eat breakfast with your child or have a scheduled meeting with your child's teacher, we ask that you park in the front of the building and come through the front office to sign in and get the proper identification to enter the building.

Our second change will come in the day to day checking of exterior doors and locks. We have always strived to secure all exterior doors but this measure is just one more system to make sure nothing is overlooked. This measure will include select faculty members checking exterior doors throughout the day and making sure that these doors are locked and secured from entry from the outside. In ensuring this we are making our school secure from all exits except for the front office entrance. In the coming days we will also be looking into fitting our front doors with a buzzer style lock system that would allow our receptionist to see any person before allowing them to enter ACES.

One conversation that we are having with our students includes us talking to them about never opening a school door to an outside person, even if they know this person. We are even looking into placing small reminders on our doors to remind students to NEVER open doors to a person trying to enter the building. We also ask that you have this conversation with your child, no matter what age or school.

As stated before, we are continuously looking for ways to improve our school safety and security. As parents, grandparents, teachers, principals, counselors, and friends we all have a common goal of having our schools safe from the dangers that other communities have witnessed. If you ever have suggestions feel free to contact us at the school. We welcome any feedback in our mission to provide a welcoming, nurturing, safe and secure learning environment for all our kiddos!

Sincerely, For the ACES Family --Robbie HArmon
