Huge Fire shuts South Columbia Avenue, Campbellsville, KY

9:26amCT/10:26amET: Power back. Big Dawg 99.9 FM is back on the air

Sad, sad situation here; smoke has filled downtown. Some power outages experienced.: Firefighters from Breeding, Campbellsville/Taylor County, Columbia/Adair and Greensburg/Green County, Summersville, and Lebanon/Marion County on the Scene. Street has been shut since approximately 4:30amCT/5:30amET. At 8:10amCT/9:10amET, the Big Dawg was off the air because of power outages, and stop lights were not working on Main Street. Early in the fire, when another really big gun was needed, Larry Smith heard a desperate call, "Somebody get Adair County over here." In minutes the department rolled in with Ladder One, and significantly changed the outcome. "It was a proud moment for me," Larry Smith said. "I know almost every one of these heroes."

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - (6:30amCT/7:30amET) A massive fire engulfing the Taylor County Tire Company on South Main Street appears to have destroyed the home one of Campbellsville's oldest family owned businesses.

South Columbia Avenue is closed at this posting from Downtown at Main and Columbia Avenue south to Rose Street.

Taylor Tire is owned by the Knifley Brothers, Tony and Ronnie, who literally lived the business they carried on. It was founded by their recently deceased father, Travis Knifley, 51 years ago, in 1961.

At 7:06amCT/8:06amET, smoke has shrouded much of the community in dense black, acrid smoke. Visibility is low. And the air quality is so low many have evacuated the area around the fire.

For the second time, Firefighters from the Columbia/Adair County Fire Department are making a major contribution to a major fire in Campbellsville. Chief Mike Glasgow, Dennis Loy, and others are here with Ladder One, and at this stage, at 7:19amCT/8:19amET, Ladder One's aerial bucket is high over the fire, rapidly suppressing flames shooting a stream of water down on it. It brings to mind not only the unit's role Ladder One played in putting out the Fruit of the Loom fire, but also the intense brotherhood between Taylor and Adair Firemen.

Larry Smith, Operations Manager for FM 99.9, is reporting this morning from the scene on this devastating fire which has completely destroyed the Knifley family-owned Taylor Tire Company. When firemen arrived at approximately 4:30amCT/5:30amET, the fire had not yet spread the entire front of the building. To the right, the building across Buckhorn Creek is the Rescue Squad Building. Taylor Tire is located directly across the street from the Campbellsville Board of Education Central office, the one time McCubbin Motors Ford dealership. Firefighters from Taylor, Adair, and Green County have contained the fire to the one building. - Larry Smith, 99.9 FM, The Big Dawg, Campbellsville, KY

Dennis Loy: We've got their backs covered, they have ours

2012-12-08 - South Columbia Avenue, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, FM 99.9 .
Dennis Loy, in a rare sad mood revealing photo. "This time we get to reciprocate. Next time, they'll do the same for us. We've got their backs covered this time. They will be in Adair County anytime we have to have their services," he said. It was an acknowledgement of a decades old mutual response between the Adair and Campbellsville Fire Department, back to the time Campbellsville shifted the course in the tragic Adair Hotel Fire in the 1970s, when without a call, the CFD showed up on the Square in Columbia. Mr. Loy said. "There's no county line here. There won't be any bill. There's never one when Campbellsville aids us. "This is a brotherhood," he said. And I'll never forget my pride when I heard the relief in a voice from the first to spot them the CFD's arrival. "Columbia's here!" he shouted.

Chief Glasgow, Firefighter Janie Potts at Taylor Fire

2012-12-09 - Taylor Co. Tire Sales, 127 S. Columbia Avenue, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, FM 99.9 .
Comrades in a common cause It was bit of emotional time for me first to see the relief on the faces of the already tired firefighters on the scene when Columbia's Ladder One arrived and later proved to be pivotal changing the course of the tragic fire. This time. It was reassuring to see Chief Mike Glasgow, left, on the scene and to see the Breeding Fire Department roll in. There's a bond between firefighters, policemen, and other first responders, which must only exist elsewhere in the U.S. Armed forces. It's wonderful to see. When there's a fire, there's a unified, coordinated effort. Janie Potts, right is part of a super Adair County organization, the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department, there, as well, to pitch in, cover to the backs of their fellow firefighters. Next time, as so often before, the Campbellsville Firefighters will be the ones to save the day. As you've heard me say so often on the radio, "We've got to quit tripping over county lines." Firefighters are showing the way. I took this picture on Saturday, during the fire. It was a bleak time for us, but as Campbellsville has done every time it faces a challenge, I know the community will regroup, rebuild, and be better in spite of this tragedy. Yesterday, that had already begun to happen, after the lights came back on and a welcome rain helped douse the flames and wash soot from the buildings, as though Providence were on our side. - Larry Smith, Operations Manager, 99.9 FM The Wave.

The massive Taylor Tire Sales fire, which destroyed a 51 year old Taylor County business was a sad, sad day for Campbellsville. Campbellsville Mayor Tony Young who was on the scene, left above talks with Tony Knifley, who owns the business with his brother Ronnie. The Knifleys are carrying on a business started by their late father, Travis Knifley. From the information I have, the Knifleys will rebuild. The tire company is their life, Tony Knifley told the Mayor. The brothers grew up in the business their father founded in 1961. - Larry Smith, Operations Manager, 99.9 FM, the Big Dawg.
