Carol Perkins: Who's Counting? It's a family tradition. The Reece side of her family would crawl to the polls to vote, Carol Perkns says, vowing, 'I will vote today. I hope others will stop what they are doing and vote, too. It is my duty and my right and I know that if I didn't vote, my grandparents would haunt me for life!' - Carol Perkins Today, November 6, 2012, is Election Day. Polls are open from 6am-6pmCT local time in Kentucky. Carol Sullivan All my life, I have been told that every vote counts. That is why I can't understand why everyone in American wouldn't take time to vote. Many are not even registered TO vote. What is wrong with a free society like ours when citizens don't appreciate this right? In many countries, citizens would and have killed for this right. Although most Americans are either passionate or passive about many things, too many are just plain indifferent. You've heard all this before now and still know people who don't vote. Oh, what to do about them. One thing for sure, all of my Reece side of the family votes. I can't vouch for the Sullivan side, but a Reece will crawl to the polls! With that said, the media would have us believe that only a few states will make the difference in electing our next president. Ohio. I am beginning to be sick of hearing how vital this state is almost like a favorite child who can do no wrong in a family. When I grew up, every state was vital until the end of Election Day. Florida. The media would have us to believe that a candidate cannot win without Florida. Here's another state walking the runway while poor ole Kentucky is sweeping off the stage. When did we stop counting? When did all states stop making a difference? I blame the red/blue map. I think it should be against voting rules to announce results of any state until every poll in the nation is closed. Those so anxious to stand in front of the map and declare winners would wait. Why would anyone bother to vote if he/she watches TV and results are given before four o'clock on the West Coast? The Electoral College. Not that I fully comprehend what I should have learned in Civics, but somehow that concept doesn't seem fair. Who am I to argue with the founding fathers, but the popular vote seems to be the most democratic way to judge an outcome, but then, again, states like Texas and California might determine the elections because of their population. I just listened to a debate about the pros and cons and I still have no idea which way is the better. I will vote today. I hope others will stop what they are doing and vote, too. It is my duty and my right and I know that if I didn't vote, my grandparents would haunt me for life! - Carol Perkins This story was posted on 2012-11-06 04:54:52
