LWC Tennis wins 3 championships at ITA Small-College Regional

Champions advance to the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships in Mobile, Alabama
By Dan White
News for Lindsey Wilson College

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Lindsey Wilson College won three of the four available championships at the ITA Small-College Southeast Regional on Saturday, September 29, 2012, as the men won the singles and doubles title and the women earned the doubles championship.

"Saturday went about as well as we could have hoped for," said Blue Raider head coach Sachin Kirtane. "Fernando (Bogajo) was great all weekend, getting through a very tough bracket. And Gilles (Cornelis) and Fabricio (Morales) played great tennis to win the doubles title.

"Laura (Vergara) played great too, but just ran into fatigue during singles after winning the doubles championship."

On the men's side it was Bogajo capturing the singles title by beating his teammate Morales 6-2, 3-0 as Morales retired due to injury during the second set.

Morales still found a championship on the day, teaming with Cornelis to take the doubles crown. The Blue Raider duo faced Cumberland's Antonio Manuel Marcelo and Pedro Rodriguez in the final, winning 8-3.

The women's doubles pair of Vergara and Rocio Cardo also made it through the southeast bracket to give Lindsey Wilson a third championship on the day. Vergara and Cardo beat Milligan's Rachel Hodas and Sarah Rainwater 8-3 in the final.

Vergara came close to making it a Lindsey Wilson sweep, losing in the singles finals against Cumberlands' Neesha Thirumalaichelvan 6-2, 6-4 in the title match.

With the wins, all three champions advance to the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships on October 11-14, 2012, in Mobile, AL, at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center, 851 Gaillard Drive Mobile, AL
