The scent of freshly turned soil is heady, conjuring visions of juicy tomatoes, fat muskmelons, corn on the cob. The aches and pains of weeding and hoeing, the hours spent in a steamy kitchen with kettles and canners, all seem a reasonable price to pay for a garden.
