Jim Helm: A true American Hero

Jim Helm, now of Ord, NE, wrote a funny note to Jr. Stotts of Columbia, KY, recently. Stotts in turn gave it to his friend Ralph Waggener and the following story was printed in the Just for a Smile News sharing news of Helm, the former Russell Countian, a former resident of Columbia, KY, former employee of Waggener-Walker Newspapers in Columbia, KY, and former editor of the once Corydon, IN, Harrison Co. A note about a friend in Nebraska, Jim Helm

Jim Helm worked with me at Waggener-Walker Newspapers and was a reporter-editor.

Jim also was known during the Vietnam War as Crazy Jim. You see he was a helicopter pilot there and saved an unknown number of lives of our fighting service men. He was known todrink a lot and was fearless in going into battle zones to pick up the wounded.

Now he is alcohol free and attends alcoholics anonymous and has for over 20 years. A lotof this time in AA Jim taught AA as well. He would take a group to a remote area for adrying out session.

He is however fighting cancer most likely brought on by Agent Orange which was widely used in this war. Jim Helm is a true American Hero, like so many vets who feel, rightly so, very unappreciated. And that is a damn shame!

Jim is training hunting dogs out in Nebraska and has a large base of famous and orwealthy customers he trains for. Occasionally Jim will call me and just talk for a while ashe does with several people around here. Some of you might remember Jim as a helicopterpilot for our own oil baron Jimmy Reliford.

Jim still has his fondness for writing and still writes a column for a small paper in histown in Nebraska. - Ralph R. Waggener, It's Just for a Smile News, Printed bySouth Central Printing, Inc. (270)-384-4757. 1-800-489-0217
