Bird watching workshop at Salato Center March 14, 2009 Admission to center is free, but bird watching seminar is $10. From Commonwealth News Center An introductory workshop on the basics of backyard birding, to learn how to identify birds, will be from 2-4:00pmET/1-3:00pmCT, Saturday, March 14, at the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort, KY. Birding is a challenging way to increase your awareness of Kentucky's wildlife. We will introduce you to the basic equipment, give you ideas on where to go birding and help you with identification techniques. The Salato Center will provide binoculars, but you can bring your own if you prefer. The program is for ages 10 and up with a cost of $10. Registration is required. The Salato Center has a variety of native animals for the public to see, including a bear, bobcats, elk, deer, bison, eagles, snakes and fish. The Center has numerous indoor exhibits and miles of hiking trails open to the public. Fishing is available at two lakes. While some programs may require a registration fee, general admission to the Salato Center is free. For more information or to register for this workshop, call 1-800-858-1549, ext. 4445, during normal weekday working hours. The Salato Center, operated by Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, is located at the department's headquarters on U.S. 60 in Frankfort, 1.5 miles west of U.S. 127. Hours of operation are 9am to 5pmET/8am to 4pmCT. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10am to 5pmET/9am to 4pmCT. Saturdays. The Center is closed Sundays, Mondays and state holidays.The Salato Wildlife Center is named for an Adair Countian, the late Dr. J.C. Salato, Columbia, KY.
