Was Chelf Motor Co. in Knifley, Columbia, or Campbellsville, KY? Information needed: Was that Chevrolet dealership in Knifley, Columbia, Adair County, KY, or was it the forerunner of today's Alex Montgomery General Motors franchise in Taylor County? By Ed Waggener Ann Curtis sent a photo of a Christmas Greetings postcard to ColumbiaMagazine.com which came from her collection. With it, she sent this information. "Here's the 1927 Christmas card from Chelf Motor Co, postmarked 1927, Columbia Ky. Sent to my grandfather, Ben Heskamp, Coburg, Ky." Those of us in my line of the Chelf family don't remember L.R. (Lee Roy) Chelf, the Knifley, KY, merchant, as having operated a Chevrolet dealership in Columbia or Knifley. He did have the McCormick-Deering Farm Implement dealership at one time there. Perhaps Chelf Motor Co. was owned by another Chelf, but L.R. Chelf, the family members we've talked with remember, was in both the tractor and car businesses at different times. But most of us do remember stories of a partnership, at least briefly, which L.R. Chelf had with his son-in-law, my uncle, Winfrey Beard, in the automobile business. That business was the forerunner of Lyon-Beard Motors in Campbellsville, KY the Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, GMC truck dealership for so long there. That business' successor, in business today, is the Alex Montgomery General Motors and Chrysler dealership in Campbellsville today. Our sincere thanks to Ann Curtis for the picture of the postcard. If anyone remembers any details about Chelf Motors, please send it to us at ColumbiaMagazine.com or call me at (270) 250-2730.
