Vietnam era Sgt. Joe Hare shares notes from Seattle reunion Three photos accompany this account By Joe Hare Five Vietnam Veterans from the 3rd Platoon, Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion/28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division got together in Seattle, Washington this past weekend, July 20-23, 2007. These friends had found each other within the last 4 months and met in Seattle for the first time in 40 years. My wife, Pat, and I went to Seattle last week for my reunion with four other Vietnam Veterans from the 3rd Platoon, Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion/28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division Dale Carry, Ironton, Minnesota; John McCoy, Springfield, Oregon; Ron Moreno, Rineyville, Kentucky; Fred Hill, Seattle, Washington. We last saw one another in the jungles of South Vietnam in 1967. It was very emotional day for all. As each one of us came into the motel there was such a bondingfrom the past that seemed to erase the years that wehad not seen each other, that there is no way to describe it. As the first day progressed there was a lot of stories, laughing, crying, and talking that took place. We stopped twice to walk the great distance of 30 feet to the motel restaurant to reminisce some moreover a bite to eat and then back to the lobby. When we finally decided to call it a day and get a little rest we discovered we had been at it almost 12 solid hours. A highlight of the event was a police escort and a performance by the Seattle Police Motorcycle Drill Team. We not only received a "command performance," but were also treated to a motorcycle escort to the event by Captain Fred Hill. When the Motorcycle Drill Teamcompleted their performance, they parked, dismounted their bikes, and to the very pleasant and emotional surprise of we Veterans, came to attention, andgave us a salute in honor of our service to our Country. In reply, we returned this honor with a "Black Lion Salute" for their service. We're back home in Columbia now. And I'm ready to go back to work. But this reunion, and for sure that Drill Team performance, are moments we'll never forget. This story was posted on 2007-07-25 15:50:14
