Poetry: Your best to each in need

Your best to each in need: A birthday sonnet for myself reflecting on a remark by Carol Dalglish

By Robert Stone, 5 February 2023
Was eating birthday lunch with friend who asked
so which achievement was your greatest one
and then all answers seemed to be well masked
so nothing came to mind to choose which done.

Companion then said this is what I think,
the way I saw you treat your mother when
you two in ways of thought were sharing link,
two never hesitating to begin.

More contemplation has not cleared this up,
I wonder if a greatest thing should be
or if the choice would be a white-washed cup
upon whose value all would disagree.

Beware to start to do some greatest thing,
instead your best to each in need now bring.
