Alumni, friends of LWC honored at 91st Homecoming Kids in rural Kentucky deserve to be seen and given the opportunity to be successful in the world. That was the message Russell County native Casey Hardy McGowan '14 delivered during her acceptance speech Saturday, at Lindsey Wilson College's 91st-annual National Alumni Association Homecoming Awards Celebration and Luncheon. "The world, for whatever reason, believes that people like me can't do things like this," said McGowan, who earned a Juris Doctor with honors from Emory (Georgia) University School of Law. "But Lindsey Wilson saw me. The girl on the farm who works at the factory; the bookworm who writes poetry and reads feminist theory; the aspiring lawyer who fights for equality and pushes for progress. Most importantly, Lindsey paid no mind to the world's belief that people like me can't get to where I have gone. Lindsey saw all of me, so I saw all of me. Thank you LWC for giving Kentucky kids the confidence to go out into the world and win." McGowan of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, received the Outstanding Young Alumna Award. Lindsey Wilson also honored four more individuals on Saturday: Stanley Curry '84 of Campbellsville, Kentucky received the Distinguished Alumnus Award; longtime friend and former staff member Duane Bonifer of Monmouth, Illinois, received the Honorary Alumnus Award; longtime friend Betty Jean Mosely of Bowling Green, Kentucky, received the Honorary Alumna Award; and Brady Button '98 of Glasgow, Kentucky, received the Distinguished Service Award, posthumously. Other homecoming activities included the Homecoming Kickoff: Fireworks and Pep Rally; the 6th-annual Faculty and Staff Reunion and Picnic; the 18th-annual Morris Shepherd Pingpong Tournament; the inaugural Brady C. Button Memorial Golf Scramble; and the Safari Alumni Tailgate Zone sponsored by TJ Health, Columbia. Nursing Blessing and White Coat Ceremony The science and art of nursing was extolled Friday evening at Lindsey Wilson College as the latest cohort of nurses was accepted into the college's nursing program. The 16 students were part of the "Blessing and White Coat Ceremony," held Friday, Sept. 23, in the Doug and Betty Jean Moseley Auditorium in the Hodge Center for Discipleship. The students received a white coat to symbolize their official entrance into the program after their hands were blessed by retired LWC Chaplain Carol Weddle. Luckey and Brock Perform Love Letters LWC First Lady Elise Luckey makes her first appearance on the LWC stage in the long-awaited production of Love Letters by A.R. Gurney. The two-person play, which also starred Associate Professor of Theatre Robert Brock, was postponed during the pandemic. The one-night-only performance covers a nearly 50-year span in the lives of two friends who correspond by letter. Brock first performed the play with American actress Annie Potts in 2002. Brady C. Button Memorial Golf Scramble More than 80 individuals participated in the inaugural Brady C. Button Memorial Golf Scramble. Button was a 1998 LWC graduate and staff member that passed away from a battle with skin cancer in June of 2021. All proceeds from the golf scramble will benefit The Brady C. Button Endowed Scholarship and the LWC men's basketball program. Luna Senica is Homecoming Queen and Evan Smiley is Homecoming King On Saturday evening, the LWC student body crowned the homecoming queen and king during halftime of the LWC football game at Parnell Family Stadium. Luna Senica of Staufen, Germany, was crowned queen, and Evan Smiley of Payneville, Kentucky, was crowned king. The No. 3-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team retained the Highway 55 trophy for the seventh straight season on Homecoming weekend with a 21-12 win over Campbellsville University.
